But a more reasonable approach would be to make Travellers know that you can't have rights without responsibilities. This includes paying taxes, not defrauding the welfare system, cleaning up after themselves, taking care of their animals and not abandoning them when it suits them, not intimidating and threatening others to get their way and that their disgusting traveller fight videos on Youtube will be banned and any incitement to violence on any platform will be met with swift jail sentences.

And that's just a start.

They are an awful people and I've little sympathy for them. I've had to deal with them on several occasions, was at home as they tried to break in, came home to their kids breaking in, having thrashed our home(a great tactic they are fond as the kids are under 18 and are under a separate legal system) and had our dog kicked to death by them.

Their "culture" is a sham.

My guess is it was disillusioned, anti-PC conservatives seeing the media going on about him his remarks, not just the anti-traveller remarks in specific.

I wouldn't have voted for him in a million years, he's an odious prick, but you can see the Trump Effect at work, lots of disillusioned people who look at Higgins as being part of the establishment and Casey providing an outlet with viewpoints that the mainstream would consider politically incorrect. Something to that effect. I haven't looked at the figures but I'd venture a bet that Casey was strong in rural areas.

Hasn't their been some issues that are caused by, or at least blamed on, the traveller community though?

My grandparents who live in Ireland absolutely can't stand them, apparently a town they live near was effectively bought up and then abandoned by a large group of them about 20 years back as well.

FF won't accomodate Casey, if he's thinking of running in Donegal - it's a closed shop. All the tickets are taken. The political establishment in this country saw what happened with George Lee and it's very unlikely a newcomer will ever be dropped into running for the Dail again except in the extreme case of making up the numbers for an unwinnable seat.

What won't be gone unnoticed is how, after the Traveller comments, he went from polling around 1% to jumping into second place. That will probably translate for FF and FG into a greater focus on law and order, policing in the countryside, more Gardai and more stations for when the next election comes up.

I'd say it was the traveller thing moreso. Longford voted Casey first and Longford is also the county with the highest proportion of travellers.

There are a lot of issues with travellers in Ireland, and I would wager a good deal of people have negative experiences with them. But at the same time that's no reason to stereotype all of them, all communities have their fair share of assholes and the settled community is certainly no exception .
