A close friend of mine was abused, but I won't go into any detail because it's her story and it should be private.

I don't know how she isn't guarding your well being like she should and sticking by her boyfriend. Then again, as someone who was domestically abused by my ex for 2 and a half years, he was always threatening me with harm if I left him or tried to seek help. If he has threatened her, it would explain why she is sticking by him. Then again, she may just be that irresponsible of a parent. I hope she does right by you. You didn't have to go through any of this.

UPDATE: My mother lied about her boyfriend leaving to the court, and I was ordered to return home. Upon returning home I realized he was still in the house, so I went back into custody of the state, and its likely my mother will be spending some time in jail for perjury and violating a court order.

Perjury is a crime. Jail time is exactly the right penalty and what she deserves. Hopefully this also makes it impossible for your mom's boyfriend to be able to stay in the house and he's removed, completely, from your life.

It still sucks that you are back into the custody of the state instead of in your own home, but if you're safe at the moment, that's all that matters.

Stay strong. Soon you'll be 18 and you'll have the power to make a new life for yourself. My advice is to avoid the temptation to escape your emotional pain through drugs and addiction. Keep hope alive within yourself and empower yourself to build a better future.

I'm so sorry to hear that. As someone who has experienced mental abuse from parents, this hits incredibly close to home for me . Parents like your mother deserve jail time for their actions.

I get your point. In those cases it sure would be aggravating to hear banal platitudes, particularly of the religious variety. In my case, though, over fifteen years has passed, so I just see it as someone responding to something to which it is inherently difficult to respond.

I hear you. Time, as well as working through the situation in whatever way works for you, does tend to let us see it with a different perspective.

When a student tells me anything like this, my reaction to them is, "I am so sorry, you don't deserve this," and to get the folks at my school who can directly intervene involved immediately.

On the inside, however, I confess to being very, very angry about the kind of adult that can do that to their kid.

Some people are monstrous to children, whether out of frustration (more common than people think) or genuine malice. It can be difficult to maintain composure when hearing about such, so I applaud you for keeping the righteous indignation inside instead of showing it and confusing the kids, many of whom naturally feel some degree of love for their abuser. Calm and collected responses help the kids more than becoming visibly irate on their behalf.

Sorry to hear that, bud. Your mama dropped the ball but you're handling this shit masterfully and protecting yourself. It's small comfort, I know, but you are making all the right moves.

This is a subject that's been a major thing in my life. In my opinion, we need to treat mental illness and abusive behavior as two separate things and not conflate them, we need to move past the "males are abusers, females are victims" dichotomy, and we need to stop assuming that anyone who's been abused is then damaged goods who will abuse others.

Thank you for sharing your story. Not a lot of people will Share their story of being abused because they are scared, which is understandable. I may have never been physically abused when I was younger, but mental abuse is just as bad. I have know very few people that was willing to talk about their domestic abuse. So you are setting an amazing example for people to come out with their stories.

Following recent events in my own life I thought It would be good to spread awareness and to discuss Domestic Abuse, both physical and mental. Just to clarify domestic abuse can be both spouse-spouse,parent to child, or partner to partner. Have any of you heard any stories of domestic abuse in your life, been abused, or generally just want to weigh in on the topic? Feel free to leave any names out of the picture if you wish, or not even share at all if you aren't comfortable with doing so.

My reason for starting this thread:
As of Friday 7, 2018 I am in state custody pending legal proceedings against my mother and her boyfriend. Following a verbal altercation between me and my mother's boyfriend he assaulted me, choking me and throwing me around my home. Before the assault I told him "if you touch me I'm calling the cops." And after he did so I grabbed my shoes and ran out of the house, walking 2 miles to the nearest police station to file a report. I was told by the police officer there that my testimony wasn't legally valid because I was still a minor (by 1 month) and that I would have to somehow get to a hospital and have them confirm my story (even though I informed them I had no car, no phone with me, no identifying information etc. they still told me I had to go, and would not themselves drive me to the hospital). Following this I walked another 2 miles to my best friends house, where they drove me to the hospital so I could press charges. Now its late Monday night as I type this, my mother has denied all my accusations against her boyfriend, and I remain in state custody until a legal ultimatum is made to my mother which will inevitably decide wether or not I will remain a legal ward of the state till my graduation or get to go home.

Not legally valid because you're a minor?! That sounds like complete and utter BS. What kind of horrible law is that...I want to swear but I don't want to get banned so imagine a bunch of F-bombs in between every other word. I'm so sorry that happened to you.

I'm a survivor of child abuse, witness to domestic abuse, and...that's all I want to say about that. But to you, I want to say, you do not deserve to be abused, okay? Remember that. Always. As for pressing charges, talk to an attorney first. It may be more trouble than it's worth, and he may not even get charged--not to discourage you, but he might try to get revenge. I just don't want you to get hurt like I did.
