The name has to do with George Washington being honest and admitting to his Father he had indeed chopped down that cherry tree. It also needs a connotation in regard to politics in DC.

Therefore, I give you....

The Washington Hatchetmen

Hatchetmen are typically assigned to carry out a ruthless task or a vicious or unscrupulous order. Newt Gingrich would approve of this name.

No?

Interesting idea.

But then why not name them the Washington Cherrytrees?

I got a perfect name.

Washington Washingtons.

You did describe Dan Snyder's character pretty well right there.

He could name them after himself like the Browns were, how about the Washington Snideley Whiplashes. Maybe not?

Okay. Consider recent history and Edward Snowden. That suggests the Washington Whistleblowers. The alliteration is great. :geek:

Or just call them the Washington Lobbyists. That's what basically Congress is comprised of so at least they'll have an accurate name. And imagine lobbyists from the Lobbyists lobbying Congress to give them entitlements. Peak NFL and American politics, everyone!

That's not bad, but the Hobby Lobby guy would threaten to sue, so we can skip that one too.

I'm not a big fan of team names that aren't plural but back in the old WFL there was a great one, The Chicago Fire. Loved that name. Too bad nothing came of them but ashes.
*dramatic pause*
If we go with a name like that we might be able to keep the "red" part of their name. Not the Red Tails but the The Red Tape. On second thought, how about Washington Swamp?

You know, the people from Baltimore have been waiting for this DC name changing exercise for decades. It goes back to when they stole the Baltimore Bullets and ruined them with this Washington Wizard nonsense. Maybe the Washington Witch Hunters would be suitable?

The Redtail one is pretty intriguing since it's honoring the Tuskegee Airmen that fought in WWII in an era where the military was still segregated.

As some of you may know, our team began 81 years ago -- in 1932 -- with the name “Boston Braves.” The following year, the franchise name was changed to the “Boston Redskins.” On that inaugural Redskins team, four players and our Head Coach were Native Americans. The name was never a label. It was, and continues to be, a badge of honor.

In 1971, our legendary coach, the late George Allen, consulted with the Red Cloud Athletic Fund located on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota and designed our emblem on the Redskins helmets. Several years later, Coach Allen was honored by the Red Cloud Athletic Fund. On the wall at our Ashburn, Virginia, offices is the plaque given to Coach Allen -- a source of pride for all of us. “Washington Redskins is more than a name we have called our football team for over eight decades. It is a symbol of everything we stand for: strength, courage, pride, and respect -- the same values we know guide Native Americans and which are embedded throughout their rich history as the original Americans.

^This is from Dan Snyder, who said that he will never change the team name, saying that reporters could capitalize the never in the quote. I'll link the whole letter, because this came up before. I think this gives a bit of insight to the name and logo both.

“There are a total of three men in the Washington Redskins ownership group who aren’t in Dan Snyder’s immediate family. All three of them reportedly want out.

Washington minority owners Robert Rothman, Dwight Schar and Frederick W. Smith have hired an investment banking firm to conduct a search for potential buyers of their stake in the team, according to The Washington Post. The three businessmen reportedly hold 40 percent of the team.

Per the Post, the move is in large part due to the trio “not happy being a partner” with Snyder, who owns the majority of the team.”

Holy moly, how is this team somehow more of a trainwreck than the Raiders?

I'm kinda sad that "Minutemen" isn't a poll option. Imagine having a team called the "Minutemen" right next to my state. That'd be awesome.

Honestly, I'm kinda glad that the Redskins won't change their name. Most Native Americans I've talked with (both on the internet and in person) were perfectly fine with the current name, though I obviously can't speak for everybody.

It was also 1925 and team-branded merchandise wasn't really a thing yet, so the existing trademark holders weren't as obsessive about protecting their intellectual property as they are nowadays.

Like MLB's Orioles, you get a lousy owner bc he's only interested in money. Over the years the product on the field diminishes and the unrest of the fan base grows. The Raiders are kinda different from that. The Davis' are into the money but they want to win too. The Davis (Al and son) exhibit traits of extreme flamboyancy and defiance not matched by the O's Peter Angelos or Dan Snyder. That's my take.

It was also 1925 and team-branded merchandise wasn't really a thing yet, so the existing trademark holders weren't as obsessive about protecting their intellectual property as they are nowadays.

The owner of the Harlem Globetrotters owns the Washington Generals name and has recently stated he'd sell the name to Snyder.

It is rumored Snyder owns the rights to the name Washington Warriors. If true, that may be where this is headed.

Back in late 1995 the Indy Colts owner, Bozo Bob Irsay, offered Art Modell the Colts name for $25 million. He turned him down. Now if that offer is still good with his sonny Jim then Snyder could buy the name and we'd have the Colts back in Maryland except they'd be the Washington Colts. Then we could speculate on what we'd name Irsay's team. Boi, oh boi, would I relish that opportunity!
