They could steal their old USFL team's name to please the Fedex folks. Washington Federals.

I mean, come on. Obviously if a team is named after a group it’s not in mockery. What about the Celtics? Is that racist? This is absurd.

“Redskins” is weird because some Natives consider it an insult, some don’t. I don’t know what that split is statistically. Honestly the thing that’s most damning is that when the Cherokee Nation asks him about the name, he says nothing, and the news doesn’t talk much about it, but when FedEx and Pepsi threaten to take money it’s everywhere. Cause, you know, FedEx and Pepsi care more about Natives than the Native Americans.

This is partially riding the wave of renaming things around the country, but they’ve been trying to get that name changed for years. I don’t know if Snyder is actually gonna go through with it, or what the new name will be. That’s why I suggested “Algonquins”, because that’s actually a group of Natives that historically have lived in the region around Maryland (and like every state up the East Coast). “Redskins” is not actually the name of a tribe. “Celtics” is the name of a historical tribe of people, so no it’s not racist. (Though I’m sure some looney on Twitter thinks it is.)

And the name "Redskins" was not a DC idea. It came with the team when it moved to DC from Boston in the mid 1930s. Their owner at the time, George Preston Marshall, was the most racist owner in the NFL, by far.

Snyder should change the name and finally distance himself and his team from this terrible legacy.

The Washington fight song is also Marshall's creation and he used that to build up his base in the South and wanted to keep his monopoly down there (also once having connotations to Fight For Old Dixie). The Dallas Cowboys and their origin story also dates back to Marshall.

Fun fact, Tom and Giselle almost bought a house in my sister's neighborhood in Concord...needless to say they were disappointed when he decided not to...I was really looking forward to seeing them at Thanksgiving dinners as well :)

My late father began referring to them as the Dallas President Killers from Dec. 1963 onward. Jerry Jones don't have anything on the Cowboy's founder and first owner Clint Murchison Jr.. Dude was evil.

Ranoria wrote:That’s why he should rename them the Krauts. Derogatory term for Germans. And guess how many people will be offended? Zero. It’s a great way of demonstrating how absurd this is.

My point being: this is absurd. The logo is a depiction of a Native American. I don’t see a problem with this, at all. If it was a white dude, then people would get pissed about that, too. Because how dare they have a white man on the helmet when they’re called the redskins? Complaints concerning Chief Wahoo, while still annoying, I could understand. This isn’t even close to being offensive. And as for the name? So what. Nobody is marching out a sports team with a name of a group they despise or do not respect. It’s a point of pride. Anyone getting drafted is thinking ‘Wow, I’m a Redskin.” Anyone watching is saying “Go Redskins”(okay, that one might be pushing it lol)

Bro, it's not absurd. He's making fat stacks on a team named after, and I repeat, a RACIAL. SLUR. Keep the logo, keep the colors, that's fine. It's just the NAME he needs to change.

I’ve never heard the term Redskins used in derogatory fashion. Savages, Injuns, maybe squaw? I’ve heard those. The only time I’ve ever heard Redskin used was in reference to the team. The only time the word held any negative connotation was in the early to mid 1800s, around when Andrew Jackson was president. It originated with Native Americans referring to colonists as white skins, and the colonists referring to them as redskins.

Now, I’m not sure intent is much of a factor with how people see the name, but the team was named after the Braves originally, and they wanted to end confusion whilst keeping the Native American imagery. And at the time even, Redskin wasn’t regarded as a derogatory term. There was no objection from local Indian tribes or its (allegedly) Native American coach.

Now, Lumi brought up that Native American populations are conflicted when it comes to the team’s name. Polls can obviously be targeted to garner favorable results, but they show, as late as 2016, that 90% of Native Americans don’t want the team to change its name.

Furthermore, as for intent. Pepsi and Fedex don’t give a damn about the Native Americans either. Similar to a lot of formerly inactive people on the subject of racial justice, what they’re doing is virtue signaling. Otherwise, they would have made an issue of this a long time ago.

There's one area in South Jersey where the high schools are all named after individual tribes.

Now that’s not a bad idea at all. I like this.

...Pretty sure it...wasn’t?

I mean, yeah, “Indian” is an incorrect term, but it’s not a bad one. Kinda like how the Celtics’ symbol is a clover, despite the fact that the historical Celtics had territory in not only Ireland, but Scotland, Wales, and even a bit in Gaul (France).
