Well this is baffling. Why would they need footage of a team they’re gonna beat by 40 anyway?

It's just like why Nixon needed to spy on the Democrats when he was gonna win in a landslide in '72 anyways. *facepalm*

It was a test run.

Even if they didn't have the test run, they could've beaten them by more than 20.

The mere fact that the Pats spied on the Bengals boggles my mind. I could understand if they spied on the Ravens or Chiefs, but spying on the Bengals is like hiring the US military to guard an empty house.

I'm sure that act is going to be shadowed, just as Deflategate has been.

The Pats crushed the Colts 45-10 when Deflategate happened. It's not like Indy had a chance to beat them.

Seeing as the Pats are caught in a cheating scandal yet again, one wonders if the league will actually come down hard on them this time as repeat offenders. I imagine this is not how the NFL wants things to be done, but since it's the Pats, they'll let them off easy. Again. Maybe a stern warning about how if this behavior pattern continues to continue continuing, they'll actually do something about it next time (an obvious bluff of course).

Yes I'm jaded about this. And I don't think I can be blamed for that.

There's a good chance they probably have done this to other teams as well without others knowing. After all, this was an independent company that did this so if the Patriots are cheating (I won't fully assume yet), they're being smart about it by using a middleman to do their dirty work.

I don't think they're going to get any strict punishments considering their long history of cheating. Nothing has deterred them from cheating.

The NFL better step up their punishment for the Pats. However, I doubt they'll go harder than a mere slap of the wrist.

The current Pats offense score 40 on the Bungles? I'd bet they can't do it.

The Pats cheating started way back in 1982

I actually watched this game live. Kinda doubt the NFL will finally give them what they deserve at this late date when they already heven't. This behavior on their part is now institutionalized.

Theoretical: If Phillip Rivers leave the Chargers, as the Dolphins, do you pick him up on a one-year contract then draft some of the elite offensive and defensive talent with your first-round picks this year (tackle, anything on defense, wide receiver, running back are all needed). Then spend next season developing the talent to surround your franchise quarterback, before taking one of the upper-tier QBs next year with your presumably high draft pick? It's a crazy scenario that won't happen, but it's fun to entertain the thought.

Speaking of AFC East teams, here's a dubious record which the NY Jets set earlier this season. Losing to the 0-7 Dolphins and the 0-11 Cincinnati Bengals to become the first team in NFL lore to lose to two teams that were 0-7 or worse in the same season. Ouch.

What I'd like to know is how exactly was the snow plough illegal?

From what I've been able to gather up in a quick search, the Dolphins were offered the use of that same snow plough themselves a few minutes later but chose not to. Shula said it was illegal (after the game), and commissioner Rozelle said though he agreed about it being unsportsmanlike, it wasn't illegal because there were no rules about snow ploughs. A rule was introduced in the off season.

It's like claiming the tuck rule thing was cheating when it was simply an official's interpretation of an existing rule (that was scrapped ten years later). Or who can forget the 2014 divisional round offensive shifts against the Ravens. Big mouth Harbaugh called it deception, but perhaps he should have studied the rule book a bit better and he would have known there was nothing illegal about it. Same guy who later had the Ravens commit a host of offensive holding on the final play of a game against the Bengals (IIRC). Then again, there was nothing illegal about that either. Unlike, say, what the Broncos did in the 1990s violating the salary cap. Al Davis contended (at the time) that the Broncos cheated the Packers and Falcons out of a Super Bowl win.

We'll soon find out what this latest video hullabaloo is all about and what the NFL thinks of it.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/2 ... -sideline/

According to one person familiar with the deliberations, a resolution is possible as soon as this week. One consideration for the league, according to that person, is determining whether the video shows anything that could not have been seen on TV or on the coaches’ tape of the game.
The league, at least initially, did not seem to believe severe sanctions against the Patriots were likely, but it was still in the early portion of its review.

Inverted Flag Law: US Code Title 4 Section 8 Paragraph (a): The flag should never be displayed with the union down, except as a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property.

Unsportsmanlike conduct, all of it. It's as plain as can be!

BTW, I was surprised about something when the Pats failed on 4th and goal from the 3 yard line last Sunday Night. None of the refs threw a yellow flag for "illegal use of points" against the Chiefs. The game was ending and the Chiefs had seven more points than the Pats! Usually there is some refball call at Gillette to bail them out by then. :p
