I'd say west african slavers were as morally culpable as plantation owners, not more so. Both derived profit from chattel slavery. It's not like it was a mystery what was being done with the people.


CSA documentary goes into this and the weird alliance along racial lines as the two groups bolstered eachothers ideology and called the defeated and enslaved africans inferior to both groups. Further, blacks descended from slavery would sometimes take advantage of this disconnect and dress up In "Foreign" garb to obtain more status from whites (sometimes to the amusement of those blacks passing off, for instance, a Georgian accent as "Malian" or whatever), as the inferiority of American slaves and the narrative behind it isn't just built on race, but on the specifics of the history of slaves. They're not viewed as inferior for being black (Well, not just that.). They're viewed as inferior for being a specific type of black person.
