Family trees- rooting out interesting ancestors

I have done alot of work on my family tree. And have been able to form a facebook group for family members on my mums side. Dating from our great great grandparents who had 12 children. Through them we now live in England, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the United States.

On my dad's maternal side we trace our family to the Lady Juliana, the first ship to arrive after the First Fleet to Australia and was part of the Second Fleet. For a long time it was considered bad taste to boast you had a family member who was a convict. These days its a feather in the cap to be from convict lineage.

I remember on my dad's side of the family my great-great grandfather fought in the Macedonian Front of WW1. He was one of the lucky ones who managed to survive until the war was over. (Though, he was almost blown up by artillery twice and almost stabbed by a bayonet if I am to believe my dad)

Take some family tales with a heaving side order of salt. The reality is probably closer to something along the lines of: your ancestor saw a single artillery shell hit vaguely near him, and the bayonet was actually a piece of scrap metal lying near him that he almost scraped himself on.

As far as my know my father's father side were German farmers living in Brandenburg, my father's mother's side were also generally farmers from the eastern Netherlands, mainly Gelderland and Limburg.

My Mother's side comes from all over the Netherlands from Frisia to South Holland, there were also Colonists from the Dutch East Indies there might even be Indonesian admixture in the family

I haven't done a DNA test yet but this is what I know.

Names. That's all you need as a start. There are various records that you can trace through. I mean, do you think that my feudal Lord ancestors from the 12th century are still around to ask? I still managed to find out about them.

Some people in my family wrote down a pretty detailed history of both of my dad's sides, but there wasn't anything super interesting. I do know I'm part German, Irish, and Swedish though, with maybe something else thrown into the mix.

Names. That's all you need as a start. There are various records that you can trace through. I mean, do you think that my feudal Lord ancestors from the 12th century are still around to ask? I still managed to find out about them.
