It's probably because the typical village idiot tends to have few, if any, records that they have ever existed, while people who are famous tend to have more records about them, which increases the likelihood that they will be remembered in a few hundred years.

Also people like being related to famous/special people. And actual idiots are probably less likely to have offspring that survive anyway.
So soon may I follow,
When friendships decay,
And from Love's shining circle
The gems drop away.
When true hearts lie withered,
And fond ones are flown,
Oh! who would inhabit
This bleak world alone?

In my case, are feudal Lords classed as famous or infamous?

That's pretty famous.

Also, I learned by asking my cousins to ask my grandparents that my great grandmother had a weird brain like mine. And apparently one of my ancestors was a plague doctor.

Yes, because officers only carried them.

There is one in my family currently that my grandfather owns, his dad (who served in ww2, I mentioned my great grandfather in this thread earlier, he was a polish tanker) died in the war but managed to capture one, so his friend came back and gave it to our family.

More then a few of those in the line. Family was wealthy once and drank the fortune away. My poor gran was always looking for validation in the lineage and we found some notoriety after she was gone.

None of my relatives were famous. We were all soldiers or farmers. I think I had 1 or 2 knights in my family, but thats as far up the chain as we got.

To be fair a good bit of its original action had to be replaced over the years. But at least it still fires well. Then again my grandfather does collect a lot of ww1-ww2 stuff. He has a BAR(isn't running anymore), a Garand, a m1 carbine, a few ww2 1911s, 3-4 kar98ks (only 1 shoots), a Finnish mosin nagant (now in my possession), a few ww1 era and ww2 era mosins, and several Lee Enfields of varying versions.

Repairs are often needed on a family heirloom like that. I think one of my great great uncles had an old SMLE or something like that, but I don't know for sure.

My maternal grandfather was a morbidly curious supermarket clerk who witnessed bits of the 1968 Tlatelolco massacre and managed to take refuge in Santiago's Church within the plaza when shit got serious. He then managed to sneak out some time in the middle of the night because he didn't look like a university activist; he didn't talk much about it for decades, he supposedly had recurring nightmares of hearing people being executed outside the Church by the military...and I never got to talk to him because he passed away when I was a baby.

Yes, to both regards. Curiosity almost killed the cat but that bit of brutal memory is far from uninteresting.

The oldest known relative all the way up the male line is a baby that appeared at the Children's Hospice in London in the 1720s with nothing but a basket and a name tag. This guy grew up to become a gentleman who's daughter married a lord.
