I mean in part any concern is because it's cats, take another invasive species and some people make it their life mission to get rid of them.. like this guy.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CM4TfBQjkXE

Cry havoc, and let slip the cats of war! Cats have lions and tigers (and bears, oh my!), and what do humans have?

NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!

I’m so so so thankful I don’t live in New Zealand because I love cats.

Although I do agree with spaying and neutering. Cats reproduce fast, and there’s a lot of health benefits that come with spaying and neutering.

I can predict what will happen.

2019- Cats are banned in New Zealand in their entirety
2019 (cont.)- Mass riots occur over the loss of our feline friends, but the nation remains divided over the issue
2021- Paramilitary groups take over and partition New Zealand, making it Somolia 2.0
2022- The Great Auckland uprising happens and the last remains of the New Zealand government is destroyed
2023- The Cats take advantage of the divided humans and take over New Zealand
2024- The Holy Cat Empire is established as they invade Australia
2025- The Cats sucessfully take over Austronesia and Australia
2026- Cats take over all of Asia
2027- Cats take over the world
2028- The Empire is disestablished and the nation of Valentine Z is established and world peace and happiness is achived.
All shall tremble before me

Cat's are bastards and people seem to think that because you CAN let them run around outside that this isn't a stupid thing to do that may have consequences that are larger than you.

The South Island council’s new “pest plan” calls for all domestic cats in the Omaui region to be neutered, microchipped and registered. Then, when a cat dies, residents would not be permitted to have another.

“We’re not cat haters,” John Collins, of the Omaui Landcare Trust told Newshub. “But we’d like to see responsible pet ownership and this really isn’t the place for cats.”

Cats are responsible for killing a lot of wildlife, it's not even for food a lot of the time, they just like hunting and killing things, they're cats. Here's a relatively amusing but actually somewhat shocking graphic cartoon on it all.. http://theoatmeal.com/comics/cats_actually_kill

Of course cats will retaliate to say if any mammal is responsible for the wholesale destruction of animals it's humans. And they will retaliate, not through op eds in the media, they know that doesn't work, they will simply murder us all. If cats killed as many humans as they do birds they would wipe out 41% of the population in a single year.

Technically this is whether we should actually curb the effect of cats on wildlife but I only ask that in the hope cats don't bother reading the next sentence.

How will we win the war!

Cats are just weird. A few years ago the neighbors cat went missing. It was eventually found, sitting (not lying down) on another neighbor's doorstep, eyes open, very much dead. Creepy. As. Fuck...

"A docile species, A. gigas is commonly seen in the pet trade; however, imports of A. gigas, as well as a number of other millipedes, into the USA are banned due to agricultural damage caused by the mites they carry."

I can't imagine New Zealand, which likely has vastly more stringent biosecurity measures than the US, would let these in.

Hmmm... That sounds familiar. HUMANS

I am all for the mass-sterilizing (or preferably just lower fertility to 10 % using chemicals dropped from planes and put into the water supply) of a fairly large percentage of all invasive and overpopulated species (humans included, no more than two pregnancies per couple), but there is nothing wrong with having pets. I do not think it is good to have a pet outside unsupervised for any amount of time, though. It is unsafe for the pet and others, not to mention uncomfortable. My dog hates being outside, she is always too hot or too cold, and is afraid of birds, and coyotes/foxes and hawks are a real threat to most pets anyway.

Cats are a particular problem due to their habit of killing just for the fun of it and the fact they are actually really good at killing small animals.

I think making them wear big plastic bibs or little bells helps though, since it messes with their ability to sneak effectively, until they work out how to move silently once more.

I'm all for controls on cat populations but a complete ban? Might as well ban humans as well.
Most of the time I have no idea what the hell I'm doing or talking about.

My brother's cat knows how to open window latches. Makes it easy for me because I am a lazy arse and don't want to keep letting him out.

Well humans are actually hoping to at least undo some of the damage they've done, but this cat ban isn't as insane or weird as people think it is. There's locales near fenced sanctuaries where cats are subject to similar restrictions.
