Senator John McCain Dead at 81

Postby The Greater Low Countries » Sat Aug 25, 2018 5:55 pm

https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/sen-john-mccain-independent-voice-gop-establishment-dies-81-n790971
John McCain, AZ Senator, is dead today after fighting aggressive brain cancer.
For those of you who haven't heard much about him, McCain was imprisoned in Vietnam for five and a half years. After this, he became involved in Congress. He campaigned for president of the U.S. twice, once in 2000 and 2008; the latter became the first Republican presidential candidacy with a female vice president candidate, Sarah Palin.
After his loss in the 2008 election, he returned to the Senate and there continued to push for changes. He continued to be in the Senate until this very day, August 25, 2018, on which he has sadly passed away.
My opinion on him? I think he was a good man. He fought for what he thought was right. He's the only Republican candidate that got a female vice president past the primaries.
Anyway, what are your thoughts?

We could use more leaders like him . He was a truly great man that many in politics could learn from. A true patriot and hero. He will be sorely missed.

I'll try to be less harsh in deference to the deceased, but I won't pretend that I think he's a good man or a hero, he's advocated for every war of the last 30 years; he's not an innocent war hero, and he at least bears partial responsibility for much of the death and destruction he has advocated for.

As I've been saying to people on Discord, I didn't like his politics, but it's still kinda sad to see him go. RIP. Wish his family well.

Another good Republican bites the dust. I didn't agree with McCain politically, but I respected his political integrity, and it was deeply offending when Trump belittled his military service because he was captured. Fortunately, he had the last laugh in the end.

CNN reported in May, that the McCains did not want Trump at his funeral. Former rivals and Presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush had been asked to give eulogies, people close to both former presidents and a source close to the senator confirmed to CNN.

Rather good of him to invite both of them to give eulogies I think

Like most others here I didn't agree with the man's politics but I had a lot of respect for him.

I'm now taking bets on how long these deep sympathies and respects last. My money is on Monday. By this time on Monday, Trump will have gone on a twitter rant about McCain.

I suspect he was a decent man led astray by politics.

I may not agree with John McCains policies, but I respect him.

I respect when he said he'd refuse to stop using the word gook. I respect when he kept crashing planes because he was a mentally deficient retard who was never good at anything. I respect when he contrasted being an Arab with being a "good man". I respect that time he voted against making MLK day a national holiday. And dammit, I respect that he tried to bomb just about every country on the planet. That man had some principles, much respect.

I approve.

And I hope Obama shows up and gives him a good eulogy. McCain's concession speech in 2008 was a legitimately good speech, so Obama owes him a good speech.

10 years later, I've grown to deeply respect the man. He, alongside Kasich, have earned some of my deepest respect. He was a true American Hero, and it is truly sad to see him gone. I am disgusted at people's attempt to politicize this because he wasn't right wing or left wing enough for them, and it pisses me off...

Man, what's up with people politicising the life of a politician? So disrespectful to the famously apolitical McCain.

*Sighs*
Well, alright.

I didn't like his politics, I just find this cruel. I have deep respect for the man.

I do dislike all the things MeriZoc mentioned, but to lash out with vile hatred and bile is to me, inhumane, so soon after his death. It leads to the degradation of society to me. Celebrating his death, more so.

Yeah, it sucks, but being offended isn't going to magically make it disappear.
