It's 2350, You're the commander of a large space fleet orbiting the Planet Kepler-186f. Earth was attacked in a surprise invasion from A Sapient Extraterrestrial Species in 2019. Nobody knows why we were invaded or even what the invaders looked like, but humanity traced them back to this planet. The damages on Earth were so bad there are entire nations that no longer exist, large ecosystems have been screwed over, but we fended them off. So, you are orbiting their planet, are armed with a powerful Death Star-like weapon, and you're given the option to fire.

In this situation, would you fire?

I personally wouldn't fire, I wouldn't have the heart knowing I committed a Genocide on a scale far worse than what they did to our planet. But what say you NSG?

Given the option to fire? If this behemoth had been constructed and sent on a mission to the enemy planet, then it's far more likely that I'd have orders to fire.

But it depends. If this species is like the Borg for example, then it is probably best that I destroy them. It'd be difficult to make such a decision without knowing more about them.

Joking aside. If you had evidence that their INTENT was to wipe out Earth, then I would fire. Just because their attempt failed does not mean that they should be spared, they made a decision to attack what amounts to an innocent in the galaxy and could do worse to others. We should destroy them both as measured retaliation and as a way to protect others.

If they meant to attack us less thoroughly for other reasons, then I would consider accepting considerable remunerations and negotiation. If they were willing, they'd be spared. If they were not, I'd fire.

Planets which have a good enough atmosphere and position relative to a star to support life, are too rare. It is the most valuable real estate. If you have to destroy a planet, destroy a worthless one such as Venus.

How would that even be possible? If this was a protracted worldwide war against invading aliens, then the odds of nobody knowing what one of these aliens looked like is astronomically (excuse the pun) small. The only way such a thing would be possible is if they used robots or something to do their invading for them, as otherwise there inevitably would be cases of the corpses of these aliens being recovered during battle, or even some of the aliens being captured alive. Even if all the aliens used War of the Worlds types of machinery, meaning they couldn't be seen directly, at least some of these machines would have been destroyed and opened up by the Earth forces to reveal their operator...

If the thing was constructed after the invasion was repelled, then one has to wonder about the gross lack of priorities in the Earth leadership, as such a project would likely take decades, using up the entire GDP and material output of most, if not all, of the world's nations...
