There was a lightning strike on the bridge according to witnesses. So it does look weather-related after all.

I just don't understand how this can be affecting you on such a level as this. People die all the time, in various circumstances. I don't see how you can bear to read the news every day.

For a nation that has had some bad earthquakes, you would think they would modernize the bridges and tunnels to withstand more than a lot of rain? Forgive me for my ignorance I am not a bridge engineer.

I'm not sure their economy allows them to do that. I might be wrong about that though.

Considering how that very bridge was undergoing extraordinary maintenance works, on top of the ordinary maintenance, you might be quite wrong.

Some sources blame poor techniques during construction (back in the '60s), excessive number of extraordinary loads (>40 t) being allowed on that motorway, and some claim a lightning struck the base of the pylon leading it to crumble. Also there's a political shitstorm evolving as M5S some years ago blocked the project for a new motorway around Genoa, which would have led to this one being closed, claiming that the idea that the bridge could collapse was a "fairytale".

We'll just have to wait and see. Most of the, if the bridge doesn't collapse immediately upon being completed, it's a result of improper maintenance rather than faulty construction. This one was completed in 1967, so that's probably the case here.

Although it looks like stocks of the company responsible for maintaining the bridge, Atlantia SpA, are already crashing in anticipation of fault.
