The Morandi Bridge in Genoa Italy has collapsed following a rainstorm with at least 30 dead and possibly dozens more. The bridge collapsed into the stream below and unto a railway and several warehouses. The exact cause is unknown at this time but its believed to be weather related possible due to a lightning strike and violent cloudburst. My thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and that a exact cause can be determined soon so this doesnt happen again.

Legislation to increase routine inspections of structures in Italy.
Further legislation to allocate more money towards restoration and maintenance of older structures.

Really just making sure people actually take care of bridges and the like.

It's a very high bridge, which has meant that being in a vehicle on the bridge was instant death. Thousands of tons of concrete battering you about all over the place isn't likely to help survivability either.

Damaged sure. Complete structural failure? No. Bridges can, and are in some regions, built to withstand far more. This was a 60~ year old bridge likely built with US post war financing quickly to get the Italian economy back up and running. Poor quality building and maintenance is entirely plausable as a major factor as to it's collapse.

For a nation that has had some bad earthquakes, you would think they would modernize the bridges and tunnels to withstand more than a lot of rain? Forgive me for my ignorance I am not a bridge engineer.

I’m going to cry. This makes me so sad. These people died for nothing. I don’t think I can eat any more (least for today). Anyone else really shaken? People should have every right to feel safe on bridges.

Call me cold, but no. Incidents like this happen on an almost daily basis, letting them affect one's life to such an extent would render one non-functional. Best to acknowledge it happened and move on.

It wasn't the rain alone that caused it to collapse, it was the wind, as far as I can gather.

And heavy storms are actually more common in Europe than you think, they frequently bring trees down, damage buildings, and cause widespread flooding.
