Have we forgotten what happened when the PS4 and XBox One were both released, and people were buying and smashing the consoles. I don't necessarily understand the concept either though, just seems like a waste of money, it'd be better to just not buy Nike products and buy their rivals stuff.

If you buy a product and then destroy it, you still paid for it. The company (usually) doesn't care what you do with it after you buy it, since they got their money. Boycotting the product would be infinitely more helpful, since 1) you get a similar product and 2) you didn't pay the people you hate. That's just basic economics.
I feel like I'd be less confused about this if the people doing it weren't the ones who frequently brag about being economically literate.

That's kind of my point. If I don't like a product for whatever reason, why pay money for it, especially if there are other companies that sell a similar product. It's like Coca-Cola and Pepsi, or McDonald's and Burger King. If I don't like one, I could just choose the other one. Why would I buy Nike when I could buy Adidas, or Puma, or any other clothing companies products.
