Also, considering the first Western-style universities were opened in the late medieval period, where the labor market was just farming, nobility, death, or the army, it doesn't even make historical sense to say universities were designed to service the labor pool.
That's the past. Find me one lad that goes to a university just because they want to expand their knowledge on a field. An overwhelming majority studies in a university solely to find a job, because they know that without a degree these days, you don't go far.
And if you do set as an example Bill Gates or Steven Jobs, they were in a different time, where computers and microprocessors were just picking up momentum.
