I had to buy dedicated/serrated bread knife, because loaf of rye I had had gotten so hard my general purpose kitchen knife couldn't cut into it anymore. lol

Rye bread can get very hard, yes. To the point you just give up and toss it. If you don't keep it in a container that provides some moisture to it, it feels like a rock very fast.
