So yeah, "I don't mean to offend you, but..." is just the preemptive version of "I'm sorry you got offended". And it doesn't magically make the objectively offensive thing you just said OK.

Works both ways. Someone being offended also doesn't magically make something objectively offensive.

Very little magic of any type happens round here, despite the abundance of foolish wand-waving.

It's okay, most of us aren't particularly bothered when we offend anyone old enough to rise above. Automatic civil sayings will automatic civil sayings.

In a misguided attempt to actually make a learning moment out of this (I dream a dream), it'd be nice to see special interest groups, especially those subject to victimisation, learn that neither the "be as loud a dick as is humanly possible" nor "be the most sensitive, easily hurt and passive aggressive at any perceived slight" are in any way effective methods towards meeting normalisation into society, which should be the goal.

Society likes mellow and can't be arsed attitudes. Embrace the firm upper lip, it got the British Empire places, didn't it.

Objects are being waved, yes. Sometimes they're measured as well, as if it is some kind of contest.

When you get psyched, dress and go out to your local farmers market, with your eco friendly bags, ready for fresh produce, only to realize it's Thursday, not Wednesday (When the market is up). Then you just make the circuit of the town square because you feel a tad embarrassed about your error and don't want to get back into your car.

Yay mornings.

The excision, embalming, and pickling process is indeed quite racy.

Oh, the British Empire could be arsed quite well, because colonialism is pretty much based upon naked greed and the ability to be violent more efficiently than those who oppose your greed. Not exactly the most morally correct motivators, but motivators they most certainly are.

Back in medieval times tea wasn't available to the British yet, so they had to make do without it. They probably drank beer instead.
