24 y.o Canadian man becomes a woman to save $1k in insurance

A 24 year old Canadian man from Alberta became very unhappy about his car insurance quote - totaling $4,517 - that he decided to do something about it. Knowing that car insurance companies still discriminate on the basis of gender and that he won't get a cheaper quote for another half a decade, he sought a simpler option. He decided to become a female for legal purposes.

The man, who still firmly identifies as a man, boasted that by becoming a woman for 20 dollars, he was able to save nearly $1,100 a year on car insurance. 'I have taken advantage of a loophole,' the man, whom CBC.ca called David, told the news outlet. ‘I'm a man, 100 per cent. Legally, I'm a woman.’

Both in Canada and the US, male drivers under the age of 25 are normally required to pay more for car insurance than women because they are statistically more likely to get into car accidents. David was angered by what he perceived as gender-based discrimination and asked his insurance broker to change his gender on paper to female, but his request was denied.

Undeterred, David decided to legally change his gender with the Government of Alberta so that he could obtain a new birth certificate and a new driver's license listing him as a woman, which he could then take back to his insurer. In order to do that, the frugal motorist learned, he had to get a letter from his doctor saying he identified as a woman.

At first, David thought that was the end of the road for his enterprise because he did not want to undergo a gender reassignment surgery, but he was mistaken: all he had to do was tell his physician that he wished to change his sex.

After submitting the doctor’s note and all the necessary forms, David received in a mail his new birth certificate, in which his sex was listed as female. ‘I was quite shocked, but I was also relieved,’ he said. ‘I felt like I beat the system. I felt like I won.’ Armed with his brand-new birth certificate, David went back to his insurance company and got the lower rate, saving him $91 a month.

Members of the trans community in Canada have reacted with outrage to David's cost-cutting scheme. 'I think it cheapens the whole process. It sort of casts doubt on everybody else's motives for making those changes,' said Marie Little, a former chair of the Trans Alliance Society. 'I think it gives ammunition to people who want to take rights away from trans people.'

----

Thoughts? Does gender even mean anything in today's society? Apparently not. Although I'm more worried that being a man will cost you 33% more in car insurance. But hey, 20 dollars for saving $1100 with no further legal consequences - that's a win right?

He can also now legally wander about female changing rooms! The joy.

The only problem here is the unfair discrimination from the insurance company. Just because you have a dick doesn't mean that you're more violent.

Good on him ! A society that discriminates by gender, should be the victim of its own laws.

Ahh, a very good example of; adapt, improvise and overcome.

Canada allows car insurance providers to discriminate based on gender?

Come on, Canada. Don't be all America about this.

Male drivers aren't worse at driving! Neither are females. Stop discriminating on insurance. There's no problem with this.

The real problem is not the trans community being upset. The person's intention was not to spite them. It's the discrimination by gender of the insurance company.

Now we just need life insurance providers to stop discriminating against the old and sick.

Didn't it used to be called life assurance? You know, because not everyone gets in car crashes, but sooner or later everyone dies.

Not true.

I have not died yet. And I have no inclination to do so. Please provide proof that I will.

Wait.... Make that legally acquired proof.

You have complained about our insurance. That's a sign of dementia, so preexisting condition, so GTFO.

Lol, this is glorious, hey, maybe they'll actually pay attention to this loophole and what causes it; discrimination!

Well, we can compare your fitness and vitality when you were a gambolling lamb to today and make some reasonable extrapolations.

Pretty soon there won't be any motorcycle insurance available to women because "women don't ride bikes".

Come on, Canada. Don't be all America about this.

I'm pretty sure that the UK charges more for young male drivers to get insureance than female ones.

But honestly, fair play to him. If your laws are bad, don't be surprised when they get toarn to shreds by the people they're shafting.

Good.

Finally people will realise that with this so-called 'feminist' (a guise neo-fascists use, to masquerade as heroic civil right campaigners of the past) bullcrap, that they have taken a swing and a miss with rights, and instead of a friendly utopia, have simply tipped the scales the other direction.

They certainly did, and perhaps will again, but so long as they remain in the EU they do not. We banned it six or seven years ago.

You are assuming that such data is available. However, my medical records of my early years are pre information age.

I have an app that measures my body fat though.

Now that's comedy.

Much better than the Hannah Gadsby performance I saw.

We should fully end discrimination. Charge everyone the same amount.

Hey!

I object to that. I don't have a car.

Greeting from the friendly European Utopia. We banned this kind of discrimination before, as far as I'm aware, anyone had their gender legally changed to get an insurance discount.

What an age we live in.
