The funny thing is (funny as in kinda sad) that many priests actually lost their faith while studying theology. However, given how you spent years becoming a man of the cloth, you tend to stick with your career decision. Sexual desires are not the only thing the clergy can be closeted about, so to speak. Heartfelt atheism is another one.

Not allowing priests to marry hasn't always been the case. I forget the century, but there were lots of priests that were having trouble caring for both their churches (they often had multiple) and their families due to the available technology of the time. So both families and parishes suffered, and clerical celibacy was seen as the solution. It worked in those times, but it may be time to reconsider now that technology has greatly advanced and all dioceses have multiple priests so there are plenty available to circulate.

Might pose a problem for ordered priests and those who took a vow of poverty outside of an order though. They can make the choice not to marry, of course, but if they do marry then their wives would have to work harder than they might have if they supported a traditional two-worker household.
