My laptop is made by a company headquartered in Texas and shipped from China, and my smartphone is made by a Japanese company and shipped, likely, also from China.

Both actually. Usually when I hear rent control bad; they tend to pay far less then we do. Free market won't solve this as the land is way to valuable.
