As each day passes by, I feel myself moving further right. Not full on, but more and more into the centre.

If I were The Roman Emperor, I would have dissolved The Senate as it was place for opportunists and declare myself the new God of Rome. I would then throw some Plebeians into the lion ring for my amusement. After that, I would create The Republicanus and The Democratus party

It doesn't test anyone on anything other than their position as a part of the cultural elite, not on how competent they really are at governance. But I guess if those two are synonymous, which it certainly has been throughout history for humans, then one would be disinclined to see a problem.

I know the history of the Republicans- the Party of Lincoln doesn't get my sympathy in the 1860s for nothing, after all- but forgot the details of who did and didn't want to annex Cuba. And Grant wanted to annex DR? I'm not sure if I'm just surprised or somewhat happy! What was the Dem opinion then, anti-imperialist racism?

Mostly. Some expressed concerns about the cost of the undertaking. They tried to get Grant to drop the statehood clause in the annexation treaty, but he refused, so it was literally defeated by a tie vote in the Senate.

IIRC part of the reason it wasn't annexed was because people were too worried that the US was becoming an imperialist power and instead wanted to grant the Cubans independence.

The Spanish-American was in the minds of Americans back then a moral crusade to avenge the USS Maine and liberate Cuba from Spanish "tyranny". Ironically no one really gave a shit about the Philippines or Guam.

Which is kind of ironic since the US would still end up interfering in Cuban affairs and supporting dictators and shit like that.

Hindsight is 20/20. Just annexing the country would have saved us a lot of headaches.

Well, the Philippines and Guam put our presence in the world on the other side of the Pacific and provided us with ports to drop anchor in. Holding those, I guess, was more of a strategic concern. But priorities change. And yes, having another great Caribbean state would be lovely! Then Miamians would only have to go 90 miles south rather than 900 miles north to avoid their houses being deluged by seawater seeping under the foundations.
