A variation on an old joke.

Once I saw this guy on a bridge about to jump. I said, "Don't do it!" He said, "Nobody loves me." I said, "America loves you. Do you believe in America?"

He said, "Yes."

I said, "Are you a Unionist or a Secesh?"

He said, "A Unionist."

I said, "Me, too! Radical Republican or War Dem?"

He said, "Radical Republican."

I said, "Me, too! Stalwart or Mugwump?"

He said, "Stalwart."

I said, "Me, too! Imperialist or Isolationist?"

He said, "Imperialist."

I said, "Me, too! Bellamy's Pledge or Balch's?"

He said, "Bellamy."

I said, "Me, too! Official adopted form or original?"

He said, "Official."

I said, "Me, too! 'One Nation, Indivisible', or 'One Nation, Under God, Indivisible'?"

He said, with happy tears in his eyes, reaching for my arm, " 'One Nation, Under God, Indivisible'"

I said, "Die, heretic!" and pushed him over.

Adding God to the pledge was objectively a good thing.

What is so bad about the imperial examination? Certainly better than the government only hiring officials from noble families or only hiring STEM majors.

It doesn't test anyone on anything other than their position as a part of the cultural elite, not on how competent they really are at governance. But I guess if those two are synonymous, which it certainly has been throughout history for humans, then one would be disinclined to see a problem.

Well, if all you care about is maximizing efficiency and material wealth, then I suppose you would not consider culture necessary for good government. But I would prefer being governed by people with ideals, vision, morals, and humanity. That is why I think studying the liberal arts in important. Some people will call it "elitist", but I say it is certainly better than mob rule.

Morals are subjective though. I mean, what if the government has morals you don’t like?

If morals were subjective, then why would it even matter? If the government's actions were not objectively immoral, why would I even care to oppose them?

They'll come for the Muslims before they come for me, and by then the cops will already have planted a gun on my corpse. I am not harming the liberty of fellow Americans to believe in whatever attempt to transcend mortality they adhere to. I expect them to do the same for me, at least when it comes to the instruments of law, since we're not expected to respect establishments of religion at any level of government.
This country was founded by people tired out of attempts at homogeneity. Disgusting that you would seek to see those ideals turned on their heads because of your petty hatreds.

Federalist Paper No. 2 wrote: It has often given me pleasure to observe that independent America was not composed of detached and distant territories, but that one connected, fertile, widespreading country was the portion of our western sons of liberty. Providence has in a particular manner blessed it with a variety of soils and productions, and watered it with innumerable streams, for the delight and accommodation of its inhabitants. A succession of navigable waters forms a kind of chain round its borders, as if to bind it together; while the most noble rivers in the world, running at convenient distances, present them with highways for the easy communication of friendly aids, and the mutual transportation and exchange of their various commodities.

With equal pleasure I have as often taken notice that Providence has been pleased to give this one connected country to one united people--a people descended from the same ancestors, speaking the same language, professing the same religion, attached to the same principles of government, very similar in their manners and customs, and who, by their joint counsels, arms, and efforts, fighting side by side throughout a long and bloody war, have nobly established general liberty and independence.

This country and this people seem to have been made for each other, and it appears as if it was the design of Providence, that an inheritance so proper and convenient for a band of brethren, united to each other by the strongest ties, should never be split into a number of unsocial, jealous, and alien sovereignties.

That obviously is not what that task force is set up to do. The task force is to protect religious liberties rather than restrict them. Although it does seem like atheists are discriminating against Christians more than vice versa, why would Trump crack down on his own belief system?

Yes, Publius makes reference to the unity of the country at the time. A unity which nonetheless was not as unified as you aim to portray it. They came from different sects and had a common public language even then. Yet Jay and Hamilton endorsed the Constitution that bans religious tests for federal officials and stood with the party whose first president after Washington signed a treaty, with unanimous consent from the Senate, that this country was not in any sense founded on Christianity. And therefore not hostile to people of varying religions. That's some pretty damning original intent in my opinion, but I guess you probably view me as unrelentingly evil or whatever nonsense anti-atheists like to make up about us.

I do see the liberal arts as important. All the autocratic countries only had an appreciation for art that wasn't based on ancient motifs among those who would need to piss off the autocrat pretty badly to end up tortured and murdered, after all. I don't think that government civil service exams should be testing people for an appreciation for it, though. They ought to have already been preselected for that very end by their interests.

Of course, you have proof to back up those claims. I mean, it’s not like you’d throw this totally unproven assumption into the debate without biased sources to back it up...right?

And no, changing “Merry Christmas” to “Happy Holidays” does not count as an attack on Christianity.

So I found a fascinating and interesting book from the library about the Roman legion, Legionary: The Roman Soldier's Unofficial Manual is a fascinating book that reads more like an actual soldier's manual than a normal history book and reads to the reader as if they were a prospective recruit.
Only half-way through and would recommend.
