Studies have actually found that, contrary to views that it is nihilistic and harmful, heavy metal may help people process negative emotions and purge anger and depression.

It's a news link, but it says this:

Leah Sharman from the University of Queensland's School of Psychology is researching the impact of music on society.

She said a study of 39 adults aged between 18 and 34 found they were inspired and calmer when they listened to heavy metal.

So, probably not harmful. May actually help.

Queensland is not a decent university. American academy of pediatrics is superior and more trustworthy than liberal dominated academics looking for a headline.

What would be the punishments for breaching said ban? Fines? Community service? Prison? Capital punishment?

I don't know why I'm bothering, but show me your link. To the American Academy of Pediatrics, condemning heavy metal.

I love dissecting studies. So, if you have the link that backs up your claims, please point me to it. You saying it doesn't count.

Correlation =/= cause. It'd take a lot of evidence to convince me that heavy metal music causes suicide and self harm...

Singers who produce obscene lyrics should be fined. Distribution/owning obsence songs should be made illegal with fines. Records should be burned in public to bring people together and the government should reward people for reporting their neighbors/family/friends who download heavy metal.

Burning records. That's really similar to burning books. And that sounds all too familiar. Can't I just keep my music?

ROFL. That has to be the single most ridiculous excuse for book/music burning that I have ever heard.

Possibly, but I think it'd be a subdivision of The Ministry of Love, since they are tasked with controlling thought.

What do you define as "obscene"?

Also, what's to stop everyone just leaving this authoritarian hellhole of a hypothetical country that does this sort of thing? It sounds like a weird combo of some moralistic McCarthyist America plus Stasi-terrorised East Germany.

Firstly, banning music is a bad idea as it restricts freedom.
Secondly, to answer this point, it could be said that people who are are suicidal or self-harm tend to listen to this music, not that the music tends to make people act a certain way.

Burning records. That's really similar to burning books. And that sounds all too familiar. Can't I just keep my music?

Censorship... Always one of the first steps on the road to totalitarianism.

I'm with Heine: "Where one burns books [edited: or music], there one will eventually burn people."

i.e. where nations restrict ideas and human liberty, they blindly walk a path to total tyranny.

So, no. No burning of books, or music, or films, or anything. No spying. No watching your neighbour and reporting them to some Music Stasi or Song Gestapo.

Just no!

Excuse me. I have a religion. Please don't lump me -- or all other people with a faith -- in with this idea.

I think banning heavy metal is ridiculous, anti-freedom, completely unnecessary and -- as the only studies produced to date (by me) have shown heavy metal potentially beneficial -- possibly harmful to the people who enjoy it.

Censorship of art, music, literature or film is bullshit.

Don't like it, don't listen.

Moralists and priests are not placed to judge secular music.
