Introduce an Internet License

Postby Ascysia » Fri Jul 06, 2018 11:08 am

Hello everyone. I have recently became alarmed at the presence of extremists on the internet, so I've been pondering methods to stop them. One method I have thought of would be the introduction of an internet license. How this would work is you would have to pass a test to obtain a license to access the internet, just as the name suggests. I'm not sure what the specifics of the tests would be, however they would root out and bar extremists (ranging from ISIS to Nazis to Communists to Berniecrats) from accessing the internet and radicalising people. To sign up for online services such as social media or forums, you would have to input your license details, and if you were caught promoting extremism, your license would be terminated.

So what do you all think? Does this sound like a good idea?

No thats stupid. People should be restricted from using the internet due to licenses, and this would be so open to abuse it would be silly.

Terrible idea. Might as well make a free speech license.
Most of the time I have no idea what the hell I'm doing or talking about.

The internet was designed for everyone to share their views and communicate, not exclude people who's views aren't mainstream. That'd mean peeps like Parkus wouldn't be here.

No it isn't. Neo-Colonialism is: "the use of economic, political, cultural, or other pressures to control or influence other countries, especially former dependencies." It is not European's taking over the world again (though I'm not entirely opposed to that).

We have licenses for cars because cars are inherently deadly. So are planes, and distributing moonshine. The internet is not. If I misuse it, the worst that can happen is I get banned from a site.

Technically the internet was designed to allow the military to keep communicating during a nuclear holocaust. But close enough ;)

I dunno, one could make a pretty compelling argument that the Internet is an inherently dangerous thing because of how much easier it makes it to transfer dangerous and sometimes deadly ideas and information.

Terrible idea, completely without merit.

The idea of whether or not someone "earns" a license could potentially be subjective.

Yea, true. But they could share their views on how they didn't want to die! :p

Same with books. Should we have a literacy license as well?

Oi, you got a loicence to use the internet?

Terrible idea, the whole point of the internet is so that information can be freely and easily accessible for for everyone, licences hinder that.

The idea of an internet license is horrific.

The modern internet is for everyone to come on freely and express themselves and their views. If they are a radical that is promoting dangerous material and give legitimate threats, then them doing so just put themselves into the spotlight so everyone can see who they are and then the government can go and stop them before they radicalise someone else.
