Is NSG useless?

Postby Natapoc » Sun Apr 04, 2010 4:32 pm

Does anyone come on to NSG to discuss and learn from others or do most just like to troll?

Do you mainly post to try to "argue/compete" with other posters simply to satiate a desire for conflict/attention?

I find that in real life people are nearly always kind, agreeable, ect and very easy to talk with but on NSG so many posters are exasperating.

Do discussions here have any impact at all or is it just a game to you?

edit: When I say is NSG useless I mean is it useless as a platform for discussion and debate of genuine feelings and ideologies held by posters.

The Interwebtubes are serious buisness after all.

And I think that, after this long on the web, you haven't figured out that people are nice, kind, and gentle IRL because they are face to face with you but are not on the web, there's very little hope for you.
To those who feel, life is a tragedy. To those who think, it's a comedy.

If you can't take the heat of debate, don't debate. If you still wish to argue here, grow a thicker skin. It is in humans to disagree.

I often tell myself that I'm not writing so much for the benefit of my opponent (since in most cases, neither one of us will change the other's mind) but for the benefit of a potentially undecided third party. It's easy to assume that NSG debate is a zero-sum game, but I've had at least a couple people approach me over the years to say they appreciated my posts. I like to think I played a part in the conversion (I'll let them name themselves, should they choose) of a couple of users. Very gratifying when that happens! :lol2:
"I am the Elder King: Melkor, first and mightiest of the Valar, who was before the world, and made it. The shadow of my purpose lies upon Arda, and all that is in it bends slowly and surely to my will. But upon all whom you love my thought shall weigh as a cloud of Doom, and it shall bring them down into darkness and despair."

Because in real life, most don't like confrontation. They shy away from it. Here, you hear people's real opinion, here you hear the real opinion's of people, unclouded by social rules and personal restraint.

I find it pretty damn refreshing personally, and love arguing seriously on here.

I come here to find out what;s going on in the world and get different perspectives on it. Today I learnt that there was an earthquake in California, which was probably caused by leftist pinko commies.

Oh I can absolutely "take the heat" but there is little point if the posters here are not legitimately concerned with issues but rather simply want to argue or satiate desire for conflict.

Here, let me get out my special device, able to tell intent with one-hundred percent reliability...

Oh, wait, such a device doesn't exist, and thus such a question is, in the end, entirely futile and reliant upon people who are already lying on telling the truth.

Of course they are. There is a huge difference though between legitimate disagreement and a simple desire for conflict. I'm asking which it is.

NSG is entertainment. We may never change the world, or even a single opinion, but we have our fun and that's enough.
