I own an NLT and I find it has a better ‘reading flow’ than the usual KJV you find here in England, but the RSV and NRSV are supposed to be some of the more thorough translations.

I don't really mind the NLT but every time (literally, every time) I read with other people they say "....What translation are you using?"
I figure it's about time for a change

I used to prefer the NASB but now I've taken to the ESV. The language flows much better.
Lately the ESV has quickly been making a name for itself as the most vetted modern English translation. The translation committee went to nearly every source imaginable to make sure they were translating things as good as possible.
No translation is perfect though, which I've been arguing with a friend who happens to be a KJV fundamentalist over for nearly two weeks now.

Yeah I used to be an anti-kjvist for a long time for similar reasons. Gotta say now that my 400 year anniversary collector’s print is one of my prize possessions

It's not even a terrible translation- it happens to be difficult to understand, but that's because it's 400 years old. The furor over it comes from unrelated issues.

It’s not terrible, but there are some interesting translation choices that lead to some odd theological viewpoints. Peacekeepers was an example of this
