So, considering I've had a New Living Translation Bible for the last decade or so I think it's about time I got a new Bible and maybe a better translation.

Anyone have any recommendations?

I own an NLT and I find it has a better ‘reading flow’ than the usual KJV you find here in England, but the RSV and NRSV are supposed to be some of the more thorough translations.

I don't really mind the NLT but every time (literally, every time) I read with other people they say "....What translation are you using?"

I figure it's about time for a change :P

Seeing as everyone uses a KJV here, you do get people who look confused when you start reading a passage.

KJV for home preference in English, NIV if I'm trying to make myself understood in these forums.

The Orthodox Study Bible is useful for its commentary on Scripture, but I have qualms about the actual translation.

I'm personally quite fond of my ESV copy, but I'm not sure you want something like my exact one, given its nature as a Lutheran Study Bible :p

I prefer my NASB, but I’ll use a KJV if it’s available and I can’t access my phone-bible.

Do you use the KJV in between when the USCCB changes it again and you get the new one?

I used to prefer the NASB but now I've taken to the ESV. The language flows much better.

Lately the ESV has quickly been making a name for itself as the most vetted modern English translation. The translation committee went to nearly every source imaginable to make sure they were translating things as good as possible.

No translation is perfect though, which I've been arguing with a friend who happens to be a KJV fundamentalist over for nearly two weeks now.

Not really. They're basically just protestant fundies who think other protestant fundies aren't conservative enough and latch onto a single issue to distinguish themselves.

It's not even a terrible translation- it happens to be difficult to understand, but that's because it's 400 years old. The furor over it comes from unrelated issues.

It’s not terrible, but there are some interesting translation choices that lead to some odd theological viewpoints. Peacekeepers was an example of this

The thought process is most certainly curious, you assume they go through with this simply to define themselves, but their sincerity in this belief is most certainly a quality of their, albeit fundamental, but genuine faith. If that is the case, then such divine attributes placed on a 17th century work merely because it is in English, is, certainly, curious.

On a serious note I have yet to figure out where the KJV Only ideology comes from. What's so special about the group of Anglicans in the 16th century that translated the Bible in part to gain a means of arguing against the Dissenters from the Church of England that makes them the only Christians who could possibly receive inspiration from the Holy Spirit when it comes to translation?

Genuine attempts to produce a real and specific church orientated translation, could confer, to members of that specific church, that those doing the translation are being inspired with the Holy Spirit. Regardless of whether that is true, maybe those Churches which descended from Anglicanism inherited a specific reverence for the official Church translation, and it stuck and evolved into what is seen today. It wouldn’t also surprise me that it has something to do with national pride, specifically, of English history and her revolt against Catholicism.

From what I gathered the three of them were in their 80's. It's possible said church is no longer in existence.

Makes no sense how they bank so much on the fact that it's also known as the "Authorized Version". It was authorized by the King of England, who would probably hate modern fundamentalists with a passion. Big deal.

The rest is basically just saying the 17th century English stirs more emotion, therefore has more truth.
