<waves from Cairo>

You know, one thing I really didn't expect in my first night in Cairo was to be able to spot the Coptic churches from the big illuminated crosses over their spires - lit up in the middle of Ramadan.

I stress that I'm not implying that everything is fine and dandy for Copts here in Egypt, but it did add some unexpected context.

Ooh, I want to see the Coptic churches one day. Egypt has some lovely churches.

Why is Roman Catholicism and Eastern Orthodoxy so popular in this forum? This seems really disproportionate compared to the general internet using population.

I guess it just depends on the culture of the people and the influence the Church has in that region.

Like down here in the South, Baptist Churches are quite popular in my area anyway and in the next town I would see three baptist churches there.

I'm Baptist myself and I see this as a good thing having all these Baptist churches since they fit well with the culture.

That's what I find weird. Much of this forum would be from America which is mostly Protestant. The rest would be from other English speaking countries, most of which would have more Protestants. And eastern orthodoxy... Do we really have that many eastern Europeans in NSG?

That would be really awesome if NSG had lots of Eastern Europeans its brings a more diverse culture here on this website.

Yeah, it would, but there doesn't appear to be a huge amount of eastern Europeans so what's with all the Eastern Orthodox people?

Catholicism is quite prevalent in the Americas outside of the US (as well as parts of the east coast of the US) and in Southern Europe, and it's the largest Christian denomination worldwide. As for Eastern Orthodoxy, perhaps that's a result of immigrants using the site?

Like I said before it depends on the influence the Church has in a certain city, town, or region. There could be small Eastern European communites in the United States.

That is also true - there's an Eastern European enclave in NYC, for example, where mainly Russian is spoken (though there's also Ukrainian, Polish, Latvian, Georgian, and even Uzbek iirc) and many people practice Orthodoxy.

My take is that intellectuals prefer high-church forms of Christianity.

The Catholics and Orthodox are the two largest denominations of Christianity.

If they were really better, they would not have excommunicated Luther.

While I was just making a meme joke, Luther was an unrepentant heretic, excommunication was warranted.

Not only Eastern Europeans are Eastern Orthodox; there are plenty of Egyptians, Syrians, Lebanese, and other Middle Easterners who are Eastern Orthodox, not to mention the large number of diaspora populations living in Western countries, and a large number of Western converts. Then there's the Oriental Orthodox, who are very very similar to the Eastern Orthodox; but they don't accept the Council of Chalcedon, and thus are heretics (sadly) in the eyes of the Eastern Orthodox and Catholic churches.

Why can't all the churches just agree we all have different ideas and docs? In the end what really matters is spreading the messages of Jesus and to worship Him.

We each worship Jesus very differently; and have different doctrines...Unlike the Low Church Protestants, for example, the Catholics and Orthodox (both eastern and Oriental) believe the Church is One; all the others are simply sects. The controversy becomes Who the Church is.

I just wish we didn't have any of this controversy in the first place. We're all brothers and sisters aren't we?
