Actually the Inquisition never killed anyone. Secular authorities did upon the results of the Inquisitions findings.

Not really a well enough known name to warrant a NSG thread of her own, so I'm coming here. Rachel Held Evans passed away this morning. If you believe in prayer, as I assume many of us here do, then please keep her family, friends, and community in your prayers.

She was 37, she had a bad case of the flu last month followed by a severe allergic reaction to the antibiotics. That was then followed by seizures, until they medically induced a coma - the seizures returned anytime they tried weaning her off the coma medication. She passed away early this morning.

Her last online post in March, for Ash Wednesday, feels appropriate to include here as well.

It strikes me today that the liturgy of Ash Wednesday teaches something that nearly everyone can agree on. Whether you are part of a church or not, whether you believe today or you doubt, whether you are a Christian or an atheist or an agnostic or a so-called “none” (whose faith experiences far transcend the limits of that label) you know this truth deep in your bones: “Remember that you are dust and to dust you will return.”

Death is a part of life.

My prayer for you this season is that you make time to celebrate that reality, and to grieve that reality, and that you will know you are not alone.

OK let me get this off my chest.

Arguing against premarital sex is hard. It’s just like you can say promiscuity is bad because you use someone for pleasure, but love is what justifies a sexual relationship. But when teenagers have often they don’t just do it for pleasure. They’re like “We love each other. I met him in calculus last month. We’ve been together for a week. Oh my God mom this is not a phase. This the real me. We’re going to be together forever.” And they sincerely mean it.

Maybe decades ago, when teens actually got married and stayed together (or until the marriage fell apart).

Nowadays, I really doubt that teens who have premarital sex are in it "forever". For most, it's just pleasure or affection, not necessarily love since marriage is expected to occur later in life. That might explain why teens are having less sex. Since I don't expect to get married until my mid 20's, I'm not looking for sex or relationships. There's also porn and growing acceptance of masturbation...

Yeah the affection part. One prominent pastor talks about a girl telling her parents “I don’t think it’s wrong for two people to have sex if they really love each other.” The lies in that love being all too fleeting and impermanent.

If I was still Anglican then Saint Sebastian, because he took those arrows like a boss. Not so hardy against cudgels unfortunately.
