I still harbor serious doubts about Papal infallibility, but I'm semi-convinced that the Pope of Rome does have a unique position in the early Church, as attested by many fathers even in the East. I'm also disappointed by the lack of engagement with the world I've encountered in Orthodoxy regarding relatively little charitable activity from parishes and dioceses, up to and including that some dioceses actually refuse to do interfaith charity. I still think the Orthodox Church is venerable and has valid sacraments, but I have serious doubts about its claim to be the "one" true Church now. This could be a passing feeling, but I felt I should give a heads up about it.

Hm, that's a bit out of left field.

While I don't mean to discourage you, there's a lot of issues on our side as well. Honestly, a little obstinance would be welcome in some positions, given the alternatives.

I'm mostly just saying this because, as I'm sure you're aware, joining a church is a profound commitment, and when you're a part of a church you're going to encounter a lot of frustrations. I have a lot of frustrations when it comes to the Catholic Church and how it's conducted itself on various levels for...Well, a good long while. I remain committed regardless though because I have faith in the sacraments, and find a lot of inspiration from a wide number of Catholic Saints and their personal walks with Christ.

If you do decide to convert, I'll of course welcome you. But don't do so just because you're frustrated with something your church is doing (or not doing), because that's not going to change by becoming Catholic, believe me.

That's the thing though, I'm coming more and more to the position that the Catholic Church is also valid, which removes a barrier to conversion.

It's not the first time a Bishop has been defrocked.

But yes, hopefully this means that there is going to be a proper cleaning house, and not just making an example of one guy.

The Pope is not going to defrock up to 80 percent of the Bishops and Cardinals. Just a few more token sacrifices and then the Church will endure

Where are you getting the idea that 80% of the clergy are abusers?

Firstly, good luck on your journey to Baptism!

Second, why did you choose him exactly? Do you feel a special conenction to him?

Odd. Granted I'm technically "Oriental Orthodox", there's a lot of interfaith relations. Retreats between Apostolics, the Copts and Syriacs occur quite often. Charity events also are held very often, though in my church theyre more Armenia-focused. Perhaps its just an issue with your individual church?

Also that's been established by the Orthodox church that the Bishop of Rome had a very unique role in Early Christianity. He was just a first among equals, though

A historically interesting choice, certainly; but he's not a saint; he was beatified in 2004, but hasn't been canonised.

Are Catholics allowed to take non-canonised but beatified individuals as their name saint? Asking out of curiosity, not to contest the point.

No one's claiming that the Renaissance Popes were all paragons of virtue - Cesare Borgia was the son of Pope Alexander VI, after all - but I'd take this one with a pinch of salt.

But aren't popes supposed to be the big good? If they didn't have the heart, why did they have the position and not nicer people?

I'm not Catholic, so have no brief to defend the Papacy.

But it's not a secret that there have been bad Popes and good Popes; and that some of the bad Popes were spectacularly bad.

All the same, I'd rather criticise the Papacy for things it's actually done wrong rather than things that more likely than not never happened. So the 10th-century pornocracy? Very, very bad. Covering up 20th-century child abuse? Very, very bad. The Banquet of Chestnuts? Meh.

Oh, well he was pre-Great Schism so he counts as a Catholic saint as well.

I chose St Stanislas of Krakow, who, as Bishop of Krakow, excommunicated a wicked king*, who thus ordered his guards to kill him while he was saying Mass. When the guards went to do so, a heavenly light surrounded Stanislas, scaring the guards off; so the king himself went and dispatched Stanislas personally, and then ordered his body to be cut up and scattered to be eaten by birds. However, four eagles guarded the body until somebody could reassemble it, at which point it miraculously fused back together.

Something about that appealed to 11-year-old me.

It's a pretty awesome story that's for sure xD

I decided to pick Charles after reading a biography on his life, honestly in a lot of ways he exemplifies the man I always wanted to be. Very self-sacrificial, devoted to all his duties, to his family, and very devout.

Huh. I never knew that. I also didn’t know at the time that girls could take male Confirmation Saints (otherwise I would have taken Michael, Francis de Sales, or Athanasius if I could pick a ‘male’ saint. Yes I know Michael is not technically any gender). I had thought for a while about taking Mother Theresa as my saint, but she was a Blessed at the time.
