Your side is bigger than 45 people. It will be lobed in the sides across the country. Every group of your creed will consider themselves on the same side. Your platoon might not stoop so low, but some other guy who claims he is on the same creed as you would. You can't control everyone who will consider themselves on the "same side" as you.

And to say that a side in any given war wouldn't commit atrocities is an unrealistic estimation of war.

Again, not saying that your platoon would, but, someone who claims to be on the same side as you that you never even met would most likely rape people.
The same with all other sides in this war. Someone, somewhere else who is on the same general side will commit a war crime in this war.
