The Senate loss in Alabama is going to be huge now.

We shouldn't just assume a conservative is going to replace him. With Murkowski and Collins, maybe McCain, the Republicans might not have the votes.

That's irrelevant to what I just said. The current composition of the Senate, before the midterms, might not be enough to confirm a conservative justice.

The thing is, from Election to Gorsuch took about 3 and 1/2 months. Unless it takes longer, it doesn't look like we can get a new justice in when the midterms roll around.

Someone on the US Election Atlas forum suggested this may be good for the Democrats/left in the long-term. I would also prefer a moderate replacement for Kennedy over a conservative one- having Citizens United overturned is better than Roe v Wade.

4. Trump will likely get increasingly annoyed with Gorsuch and put more populist judges with broader views of government power in any future SCOTUS vacancies. Roberts also seems cautious about doing anything too radical if he becomes the new swing vote and would likely disappoint hardcore conservatives. Courts will be less of a political flashpoint going forward, which probably benefits the left.

That assumes no Republican defections. Murkowski and Collins have both shown themselves willing to switch sides on abortion issues. For replacing Scalia and bringing the Court to balance, they stayed on board. For a possible change in the swing vote for Roe v. Wade, they may jump ship.

True, though I don't think anyone can say for certain who would have won. I could totally see Sanders doing better in the rust belt areas, but worse than Clinton in suburban areas, but like I said there's no way of being sure.
