Saudi Arabia Lifts Infamous Ban On Woman Driving

Postby Likar » Sun Jun 24, 2018 8:18 am

The news:
At the stroke of midnight local time on Sunday, extraordinary scenes unfolded on the roads of Saudi Arabia.

Women were seen behind the wheels of cars and astride motorcycles — driving on the country’s streets for the first time in decades, following the Islamic kingdom’s decision to lift the world’s only ban on female drivers.

Pedestrians cheered as women motorists drove by, and male drivers shouted words of support and offered thumbs-ups through car windows. Photos shared on social media showed Saudi police officers giving out flower bouquets and cards with words of encouragement emblazoned on them to women drivers.

“I always knew this day would come. But it came fast. Sudden,” talk show host Samar Almogren told The Guardian as she drove across the capital Riyadh. “I feel free like a bird.”

Other women used similar language to describe their maiden driving experiences. “It’s liberating,” one woman told Al-Arabiya on Sunday.

“I feel happy, relieved, I feel like I’m free,” an oncologist in Jeddah enthused, according to CNN, as she drove her husband and children around the city.

Dang. I would be happy to say Saudi is taking in change like nothing happened now. They first lifted the ban on cinemas, now on woman driving. Your opinion?

Yeah. They should have done this decades ago like every other nation in the world. But at least they stop it now..

Why shouldn't women be able to drive, if they're over the age limit? It was about 70 years too late, but a good move.

That's a shame, now these guys have competition on the road.
The Creeping Barrage is the name given to a method of firing artillery. At the beginning of Trench Warfare the basic tactic was to fire lots of artillery at enemy trenches for a sustained period of time and to stop firing just before the infantry attacked. However this method wasn’t very successful as the German had built strong bunkers and were able to man the defences in the time between the bombardment ending and the infantry getting to the trenches. A solution to the problem of the time lag between the bombardment and the arrival of the infantry was to change the way that the artillery was fired. Instead of just aiming at the same target the creeping barrage moved forward at a prearranged pace.

This is good news, but they executed the women in charge of the protests to cause this change.
Saudi car industry naming models after them when?

Hell, doesn't need to be the Saudis. Someone will get round to it, maybe, if we can be bothered to let people know about it, and if our media won't suppress news that makes the Sauds look barbaric.

There is an out of control trolley speeding towards Jeremy Bentham, who is tied to the track. You can pull the lever to cause the trolley to switch tracks, but on the other track is Immanuel Kant. Bentham is clutching the only copy in the universe of The Critique of Pure Reason. Kant is clutching the only copy in the universe of The Principles of Moral Legislation. Both men are shouting at you that they have recently started to reconsider their ethical stances.

Pretty sure it is mainstream in most of the rest of the world.

As I said, I hope that the Saudis continue to let women do the same things that men do.

It'd be cool if women's rights activists could also drive, but I guess there's a price to pay for "progress."

Indeed.

Alas, they sacrificed themselves and their lives to ensure that other women can drive. Cold comfort though, given the fact that Saudi prisons don't seem to be that great.

It's like Saudi Arabia is slowly updating it self to be compatible with today's world.

They have aways to go, it's like there still running Windows 98 while the rest of the world is on Windows 10.

Even then, there 98 isn't even updated fully, it's still installing updates.

This is one of many 'updates'. Congrats for updating to let woman drive, now if you could stop flogging, torturing and, killing gay people for being gay that would be better.

(In fact just stop flogging and torturing all together)

I wouldn't say it is progress compared to letting women vote, but when your government discriminates against women legally, I'd probably take any positive step I can get from the Saudis.

I suspect mayhaps the Saudi leadership heard too many comedy bits about women being poor drivers and took said bits seriously due to a mistranslation.
