Wasn't the whole point of this about getting rid of foreign influence on our laws and politics?

He's not agreeing to that though is he

Fox said that he would not drop Europe’s standards on human rights in exchange for trade deals, as he explained why limited progress had been made with some nations that the UK currently trades with under EU arrangements.

So they are still following EU standards, but without many of the benefits. Meanwhile, Britain will have to choose whether to drop some human rights protection in return for trade deals on the same level as they had before.

Talking about Brexit Day celebrations, assface Defence Minister Tobias Ellwood blocked Parliament's calls to celebrate the day with a nationwide Red Arrows flypast because it would be "too divisive"

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/articl ... ainer.html

It's a bit like telling a football team they cannot celebrate their win in case it upsets the losing team. It's called victory, we celebrate victories.

Do the government often put on air shows for the winner of the Premier League? The government showing such extravagant preference to a subset of the population might be seen as somewhat divisive.

Leaving the EU isn't a victory, though. Not in the way that winning a football match is. You aren't competing in a contest with Brexit on the line. Brexit is a political decision, and one that was made years ago.

Well the previous government used 9 million to spread propaganda (although it doubled up as free toilet paper) so I think we're entitled to a 9 million budget to masturbate over.

I don't particularly fault people for wanting to celebrate Brexit. I think they're wrong to want to leave the EU, but clearly they're very emotionally invested in doing so, so it only makes sense that they'd want to celebrate when it finally happens.

yeah we're not wasting our fucking money on a "victory" parade for you. you're free to celebrate in your own stadium the way football teams do if you really feel like it. it's nothing more than nationalistic self-aggrandizement.

like holy shit there's a chance people will be mourning the loss of their EU citizenship against their will or dealing with mountains of paperwork and incoming debt as they need to sort out the brexit mess and your fucking solution to that is to fly planes over them to "celebrate" it are you fucking joking me of course they told you no. and that is the absolute realistic best case scenario for brexit day, nevermind what will happen if even half of project fear becomes true. (i'm already getting pissy at the idea of it being a Y2K thing where the government pulls overtime to make sure you aren't stuck in a bread line (wow like that would ever happen in the UK except for the several times it happened in your lifetime nevermind your parents lifetime) and we need to deal with people going "lol so what about all that stuff huh")

It's also not 'Parliament's calls'. There's been no 'call' from, or vote in, Parliament as a unit, or a bloc therein, over the Red Arrows. Even the Mail story makes it clear that all's that happened is a single Tory MP (Nigel Evans) associated with the Leave Means Leave group has 'appealed' to the Ministry of Defence, and this has been knocked back by a junior Minister (Tobias Ellwood; Under Secretary of State for Defence People and Veterans).

Winning one referendum with the slightest margin over two years ago does not give one side control over the entire national spirit and all a country’s resources.

What is the point in celebrating leaving a political and economic union? It's not like bands of brave partisans fought EU stormtroopers to a stalemate in darkest Surrey. We are leaving a political and economic union. That's hardly the sort of thing you do a coin for.
As an editor I seam to spend an awful lot of thyme going threw issues and checking that they're no oblivious errars. Its a tough job but someone's got too do it!

The EU has been systematically making very rich people even richer while chucking everyone else the occasional scattering of crumbs to keep them happy for the last few decades. About all that's likely to change for almost all of us is a reduction in crumbs. I'm not that fussed about celebrating its existence or our departure from it.
