Puerto Rico has been part of the USA for 120 years, and never once have their government or people expressed a desire to return to being a Spanish colony.

Probably because it has been convenient for them to remain a US territory (not a "part" of the United States- Puerto Rico is an unincorporated territory, meaning that the United States itself does not regard Puerto Rico as being legally part of the US). Puerto Ricans were enthusiastically pro-Spanish until it became clear that the US was going to win.

I don't think that statehood is really what is best for Puerto Rico. Everyone talks about the benefits of statehood, but I am not sure they know what they are.

Basically, it means Puerto Rico would get representation in Congress, (2 Senators and I am guessing 3 Reps) and 3 electoral votes.

In the US, tax revenue isn't distributed to states, so Puerto Rico wouldn't get out of its debt. It would probably get more national attention and it would change US national politics to have not only a heavily Hispanic state, but one that speaks Spanish.

Really though, I think that Puerto Rico would be better off as a better treated Commonwealth. It is easier for Congress to bail out PR and encourage investment there, when it is a Commonwealth, than as a state.

Also, US territories do receive some benefits states don't, PR isn't classified as a territory, but it along with the Virgin Islands receive a tax break on rum, so it is taxed less than rum from the US proper. It is a small thing, I know, but it is an example.

120 years ago, I'll give you that. If Spain came to take PR back, the Puerto Rican people would definitely not choose to rejoin their former coloniser. Especially since there are many Puerto Ricans in the rest of the United States, who speak English and have more of a connection to the USA than to Spain.

If it has 2 Senators and 3 Representatives, it would have 5 electoral votes.

Only by decree of the island's occupiers. History has demonstrated that Puerto Ricans themselves have no particular qualms with switching their allegiance according to convenience, so claims that they "want to be American" fall rather flat.

Um no you don’t know US law. A US territory is apart of the US, meaning that if you are born on a US territory you are an American citizen, America Samoa being the only exception to this.

The unincorporated has to do with weather or not parts of the constitution apply.

Puerto Rico is about $74 billion in debt. With all that debt, would their state government be able to function? If so, then they should become a state. If not, I don't think so.

California, New York, and Massachusetts all have larger state debts. If your number included private debt, add Illinois, New Jersey, Texas, Pennsylvania, Washington, Michigan, Florida, and Ohio to that list.

One more year has passed since the last UN meeting on the decolonization of the US territory of Puerto Rico. Like most years, people from PR. and other nations talked in front of a committe on decolonization. You can read about what happened below. In PR. all the political parties are in agreement that PR. is in fact a US colony. Even the US government has hinted that PR. is a colony with no actual sovereignty.

PR. problem has been that the different political parties in PR. are not united when they go in front of the US congress. But it seems this might be changing. With all the problems PR. is facing a large segment of the population want results and less talk. When it comes to results it seems the head of the independence party has gotten both the Commonwealth party and Statehood party to agree on having conversations on forming a united front before the US congress when it comes to the decolonization of PR.. Time will tell the results.

I think this united front will be productive since people want actual results which benefit PR. No more feet dragging. Of course, chances are the big losers will be the traditional parties. Chances are something new will pop up to save the day, Cough cough ...Yulin.. Cough cough.
