Domino's Pizza funds fixing potholes in American towns.

Postby Petrolheadia » Sat Jun 16, 2018 9:27 am

https://www.popularmechanics.com/techno ... -potholes/
https://www.citylab.com/transportation/ ... ne/562829/
https://www.theguardian.com/business/20 ... astructure

Apparently, Domino's Pizza, the largest pizza chain in America, has decided to give pothole repair grants to towns in need of it, called "Paving For Pizza", after the CP+B ad agency told them to do so.

They're planning to give pothole repair grants of up to $5000 to 20 towns this year, and possibly more, as the potholes can cause "irreversible damage to your pizza”, on the condition that the repaired potholes would be painted with a Domino's logo. The pilot program has already been launched in Bartonville, TX, Milford, DE, Athens, GA and Burbank, CA.

What do you think?

In my opinion, it's a quite clever advertising gimmick, and it puts American infrastructure problems in the spotlight. According to the American Society of Civil Engineers claims, the damage will cost Americans $240m over the next 4 years.
However, I don't think Americans would actually pay more in taxes to have it all repaired, so the potholes will stay a necessary evil in a low-tax country.

$5k won't fix a lot of potholes, and it's just grants to governments.

Good for them.

Sad that the Trump administration, that said he would fix America's infrastructure, is losing to a pizza joint.

Domino's Pizza cinnamon sticks are awesome and even with a 4 dollar tip a large pizza + cinnamon sticks + nestea is only 18 bucks.

Domino's you are awesome.

It just means that we have to elect people who will fix things instead of morons who said that they would fix things, or in other words make them great again, and then don't fix things/make them great again.

Americans seem to prefer lower taxes to smoother roads.

To be fair, in America you can just spend the saved tax money on replacing your car with a light truck.

America's government is the Chrysler Co. of public budgeting - it's not anywhere near good quality, but it's really cheap.

Good on them, even if it is an advertising gimmick, its still helping people by fixing roads.

But its sad that a pizza company is having to help these towns get some work done for their roads.

If being a "big government bureaucrat" means that you have non lead water pipes, then being a "big government bureaucrat" is good.

It's thanks to "big government bureaucrats" that I have an income,

What we need to do is update the minimum wage to give you more money so that you can fed yourself.

Provided companies actually adhere to libertarian principles, libertarianism can work.
The problem is it's like anarchism in that it requires basically everyone to be united behind an ideology and dissent not to exist in order to be functional. It's a;
"If literally everyone believed in this thing and acted this way, this would work." ideology.

So the fact libertarians can't convince their opponents is pretty much the death of it imo.

This is an example of libertarianism working, isolated, in one issue, in one small way. We could use more libertarian attitudes in companies, but ultimately, we shouldn't rely on it becoming widespread enough to actually work as a holistic system.

"Companies should behave this way more often." is positive.
"We should base our society around the idea that companies WILL behave this way." is the wishful thinking that libertarians rely on.

There is an out of control trolley speeding towards Jeremy Bentham, who is tied to the track. You can pull the lever to cause the trolley to switch tracks, but on the other track is Immanuel Kant. Bentham is clutching the only copy in the universe of The Critique of Pure Reason. Kant is clutching the only copy in the universe of The Principles of Moral Legislation. Pay working people get more money = working people spend money = company gets you more money

Or: The rich tax dodging executives get an FBI raid, instead of prison a pay cut that they must spend on it's lower workers.

Just because the government forces someone to give me more money doesn't mean I will get more money from my job (long run)

I repeat, if I am not profitable, I will get fired. Just because I get 10 dollars per hour doesn't mean my job's per hour value will increase to 11 or 12 or something, it will stay at 10 and would fuck me over.

How about tiering the system progressively?
Companies with less than a certain number of employees already avoid a large number of regulations and so on, in order to protect "mom+pop" stores.
we could do similar and say that large international corporations have the responsibility to pay a higher minimum wage than smaller companies.

Such companies are profitable, and need employees to sell goods and so on, they have little choice.
