The Best Book In The World

Postby Xerographica » Wed Jun 13, 2018 5:27 pm

There are 130 million books in the world. Which book is the best? Let’s find out!

Participants can vote and/or donate for their very favorite book. To vote for your favorite book simply reply to this thread with the title and author. Please note that you can only vote once. Voting means one person one vote. If you have any puppets, you are not permitted to vote with them.

To donate for your favorite book you first must purchase one of the following from the NationStates store

1. Supporter: $2.99
2. Postmaster: $4.99
3. Postmaster-General: $9.99

Reply to this thread with the amount rounded up (ie $2.99 -> $3) and indicate which book (title and author) that it is for.

Purchases/donations made prior to this thread cannot be applied to your favorite book. If you already have Postmaster-General, then in order to donate for your favorite book, you’ll have to make a purchase for somebody who doesn’t already have Postmaster-General. Making a purchase for your puppet is acceptable.

Rules

- One person one vote
- Voting with puppets is prohibited
- Donating multiple times for multiple books is permitted
- Previous donations can’t be applied to your favorite book
- Screenshots can’t be used as proof of donation
- Trophies will be used as proof of donation

Results

VotingDonating
5 - The Lusty Argonian Maid by Crassius Curio
3 - Starship Troopers by Robert Heinlein
2 - The Wealth of Nations by Adam Smith
2 - Foundation by Isaac Asimov
1 - Worm by J.C Mccrae
1 - Codex Seraphinianus by Luigi Serafini
1 - The Art Of War by Sun Tzu
1 - The Idiot by Fyodor Dostoevsky
1 - Homage to Catalonia by George Orwell
1 - Hunchback of Notre Dame by Victor Hugo
1 - Band of Brothers by Stephen Ambrose
1 - Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss
1 - The Better Butter Battle Book by Dr. Seuss
$10 - Starship Troopers by Robert Heinlein
$6 - The Lusty Argonian Maid by Crassius Curio
$3 - The Wealth of Nations by Adam Smith

Backstory

This is the third NS experiment to test the difference between voting and donating. In the first experiment, many people participated in the voting poll, but only one person participated in the donating poll. In the second experiment, several people participated in the donating poll, but there was a concern that people were voting with their puppets. Hopefully the problem with puppets will be minimized in this third experiment.

Discussion

- Which book is the best?
- How do you define “best”?
- Is voting or donating a better way to rank books?
- Are you more likely to read a book that's highly ranked by voting or donating?

I vote for The Wealth of Nations by Adam Smith. In order to donate for this book... I need to make a donation for another member. Hey Infected Mushroom... how about it?

On a more serious note, I cannot make an honest judgement about this until I get around to becoming immortal and trawling the world's libraries. I would have preferred a thread talking about how Alex Jones is actually Jesus reincarnated and is here to kick all of our asses.

Look, people don't have money. This doesn't say it's the best book, it says it's who has the most money. That's why the Wealth of Nations is up there. Capitalism, capitalism... *tsktsktsk*

You can still vote for your favorite book.

Even if you were immortal I'm not sure if you would be able to read all the books. I think new books would be written faster than you could read them. Therefore... prioritization. We can use voting and/or donating to help each other prioritize which books we read next.

No, people have money, but no one spends it on nationstates. Don’t get me wrong, I think it’s a great site and I think Max Barry’s a good author, but that’s why I buy his books.

This just says who sucks at money management.

EDIT:
But I’ll bite, my favorite book is probably either Enders Game or Starship Troopers.

Well... subjective, isn't it? Some would say The Bible, some would say The Quran, some would say any of Stephen Hawking's work, some would say Archimedes' works, some would say The Hamlet, some would say The Merchant of Venice.

The point is, best is very subjective for each person, because of the different interest and stuff.

I read and watched Ender's Game but only watched Starship Troopers. I'd personally vote for Ender's Game but I recognize that it isn't a perfectly informed decision. I did really love Stranger in a Strange Land.

Anyways, you can only vote for one book. So which one will it be?

Let’s go with Starship Troopers, I liked the way it described the training regimens and I feel like it has a better built world IMO.

I'm not voting, but the Bible. Or, alternatively, the Confessions of St. Augustine. Or, Paradise Lost by Milton. Or the Divine Comedy, Dante's masterpiece. Or Aquinas' Summa Theologica. The list goes on.

There is an out of control trolley speeding towards Jeremy Bentham, who is tied to the track. You can pull the lever to cause the trolley to switch tracks, but on the other track is Immanuel Kant. Bentham is clutching the only copy in the universe of The Critique of Pure Reason. Kant is clutching the only copy in the universe of The Principles of Moral Legislation. Both men are shouting at you that they have recently started to reconsider their ethical stances.
