Germany is considering making state-funded feminist porn and broadcasting it to the public to combat sexist stereotypes.

The material, which would include 'fat, skinny, young and old people' will be available on the websites of public broadcasters ARD and ZDF, if the idea goes ahead.

The proposal was voted on by Angela Merkel's social-democratic coalition partners at a general assembly in Berlin.

The delegates accepted a proposal from their youth wing to adopt the idea of government-funded feminist pornography for educational purposes as part of their party programme.

The SPD, the junior coalition partner of Angela Merkel's Christian-Democratic Union (CDU), is the biggest party in Berlin where it governs together with coalition partners the Greens and the far-left Die Linke.

In the proposal, the SPD wrote: 'Mainstream porn generally shows sexist and racial stereotypes in which consent is not a theme and certain "optimal" body types are made as standard.'

'In these films, sex seems more like a performance or competitive sport: everything seems to work right away, there is no communication between the performers, no trying out, failure and trying out new things.'

According to the SPD, it influences modern society in a negative way as youths have 'unrealistic imaginations of sexual life'.

Socialist youth member Heike Hoffmann, 20, is one of the SPD members behind the proposal.

She said: 'In feminist porn there are fat, skinny, young and old people and the sex is enjoyed by everyone.

'In mainstream porn, sex is like a competitive sport, the focus is only on the woman who often is humiliated, and contraception does not matter. Young people should get more access to feminist porn.'

The idea might have been inspired by Sweden, where in 2009 the state film institute spent £44,813 financing Dirty Diaries, a series of short porn films produced by female film artists.

The SPD also proposes that German broadcasters ARD and ZDF buy some of those movies and offer them on their online media libraries.

I'm slightly concerned about this, as most 'feminist' initiatives quickly turn into pure rank sexism, but ultimately, I think the effect will be small. Porn is already filled with pure rank sexism, so it's kind of like dropping poison into a bowl of poison. People like what they like, and I suspect "middle aged dude fucks teen hottie" will quickly become the most consumed government porn.

Also worth note, they're competing in a space where porn is effectively free, so it's not going to be like they will have a market advantage giving free porn.

I don't really have a problem with this (government funded porn), although I curious to see how it works out (if at all).

I was under the impression that Berlin was already one of the world centres for the production of "feminist" porn (which in truth mostly just means higher production values and something slightly more approximating real world situations, people who act slightly more like real people, or fantasies that are fairly clearly fleshed out as such, rather than entirely plotless banging - not really something to turn into a front in the culture wars).

So in light of that, this just seems like a fairly stock-standard local government initiative to fund a particular start-up industry. If it was video games or whatever, no one would bat an eyelid. as long as they have the sense to not go down the "porn i don't think is acceptable feminist should be banned" route then i can't say i care. there's the issue, as always, of the excessive focus on the "humiliation of women" or "consent". there are feminist pornographers that create BDSM porn focused around humiliation or consensual non-consent, but these so called paragons of feminism will never back that kind of pornography. germany, for example, already has laws banning the distribution or sale of certain videos even if they acts performed are actually 100% legal if they are "violent". so i'm always extremely skeptical of these kinds of moves, because they almost never actually stop at "oh we just need to educate people more".
