It's a unitary state too, so legally the government is on much firmer ground than the individual cities. I'm pretty sure Palermo and their friends will get crushed in a court of law.

Unless we really commit to rebuild Africa like what we did with Europe after the Second World War, and make it a continent of hope and opportunity, the immigration problems will only continue.

Same for the Middle East: I am getting tired of the deadly stalemate in Syria.

Here's a plot twist and a half! The city of Palermo in Sicily is allowing the rescue boat to dock in it's port, in defiance of the central government.

Welp that was a dumb move. You don’t fuck with a unitary state, especially one that can take away your right to self governance.

They can just stop repairing the port. And when Palermo's dockworkers have to pay to repair their own port, they'll know who to thank, the next time that they vote.

And the elephant in the room trumpets again, are we going to listen this time?
Populations are growing desperate, a situation exacerbated by lack of proper funding and leadership. Further compounded by climatic variables which would appear likely to get worse. There will be more, many more, unless we begin to tackle unsustainable population growth.

The Liberals are turning away people in need that are fleeing from conflict zones and areas damaged by climate change.

Italy is already economically stretched from debt and red tape. It's frankly ridiculous to expect them to take in migrants when they haven't solved economic problems for their citizens at home.

Or just incompetent corrupt governments. Or that they were mistakenly lied to by the human smugglers about what Europe will do for them.

Why work in Africa when you can just claim you're a refugee in Europe where it's believed that means the EU has to take care of you forever?

Italy (as has the rest of Europe) has taken in millions of refugees in the past couple of years. At some point, you simply have to say 'sorry, we need to integrate the ones we already have'. It's a sad truth, but that point had to come eventually.

The fact that over the past year the largest number of people showing up in Italy aren't coming from nations at war or from oppressive dictatorships, just nations that suck.

Interesting, I thought Europeans were secular and proud.

I'm Russian, so I operate on a different wave-length to Western Europeans. However, when it comes to migrants coming into Russia specifically (lol), I don't have a big problem with Muslims considering we have our own native population.

Let's see those numbers then.

http://www.asylumineurope.org/reports/c ... statistics

Interesting numbers do you notice the 58.2% rejection rate, or that the largest number came from Nigeria, a nation that's not at war?
According to the glorious Data that you must swear by nearly 60% of the people who showed up in Italy last year were legally declared not Refugees.

What's funny is looking at other countries the refugee numbers actually seem to make sense but Italy's numbers seems to get a lot of nations that other nations don't get.

http://www.asylumineurope.org/reports/c ... statistics
According to this chart, Spain took in Zero refugees from Senegal, Ivory Coast, or Gambia.

All very interesting.

Really we can further narrow it down, people under Subsidiary protection or Humanitarian protection are technically people rejected as Refugees but accepted for other reasons such as country instability.
