It depends on the instance we're talking about. There was this propaganda thing that, basically, the Americans were so awful that you should kill yourself rather than let them do whatever horrible rapey-cannibaly things they had planned. That obviously wasn't true, and resulted in totally avoidable deaths. And there were instances where Japanese soldiers used Okinawan civilians as meatshields.

It's also true that Japanese soldiers at Iwo Jima and Okinawa were told (paraphrased), "every minute you keep the Americans from holding this island is another minute your family back home can live in peace." And that this was a big part of why the Japanese soldiers fought so hard despite terrible conditions and no food.
