Medicare trust fund to run out by 2026, Social Sec by 2034.

Postby Petrolheadia » Thu Jun 07, 2018 11:09 am

According to a study done by the US government, the trust fund behind Medicare is going to run out by 2026. This is 3 years behind the 2017 study. Social Security in general will be more solvent, lasting for 8 years more until 2034.

The main factors behind this increase are reportedly the decreasing employees/retirees ratio, recent tax cuts lowering income and potential new expensive treatments that can be developed in the future. The yearly Medicare costs per beneficiary are expected to rise by about a quarter (ca. $13.6k to $17k) in the next 5 years.

What's your opinion? What do you think should be done?

I think the retirement age should be increased, as the life expectancy keeps rising and employees/retirees ratio keeps falling. Increasing taxation in the US also wouldn't hurt, concerning the nation's budgetary concerns.

I'd like to hear what Saiwania and Salangriado think, since they are completely opposed to the idea that birth rates are too low to sustain a functioning pension system long-term.

When it comes to Saiwania, it is certainly gonna be edgy and have something to do with minorities.

He's more of a libertarian on the issue .. saying everyone should fend for themselves when it comes to retirement plans.

My high school government teacher said the same thing was going to happen decades ago. To be totally honest Americans already pay stupid high taxes and get very little in return. Most of it is taken by pentagon wastefulness in the MIC. The rest goes to single mothers, farmers, Sean hannity, and the other welfare queens. To be honest if you are banking of social security to let you retire you are sadly mistaken. Retirement will need to be your own savings merely supplemented by social security.

Technically, if medicare runs out by 2026, we needed to make more babies 10 years ago.

For Social security, we needed to make more 2 years ago.

True. We could import more people too, but the current administration is opposed to that.

From that perspective, killing all the population is a perfect way to end deficit forever.

This is false actually, only 1/8th of the total government spending goes to the military. Half to transfer/social programs btw i.e. 20% of the GDP.

I mean, the workers are forced to pay for social security. If it was a voluntary institution then I could agree with you, but crudely defaulting on people that were coerced to pay tens, hundreds of thousands and sometimes even millions to it throughout their life doesn't sound ideal.
