As somebody who works with kids everyday, I understand this. We're very accommodating when parents are late because of traffic or work and especially if they call us to let us know. But 40 minutes late because you forgot where your kid was is what happened yesterday.

Also talk to your manager, next time this happens you should get paid. Parents do run late and a designated person should stay with the kids and get paid for their time. Your time has value.

Typically we all just stay if a kid is left after six. Company policy is no staff member is alone with any kid. Two staff members with one kid, at least.
