An Upgrade to Yourself?

Postby San Lumen » Mon Jun 04, 2018 8:41 am

I saw the film Upgrade last night and it got me thinking. I dont want to give a lot away regarding the plot so I wont mention it here but I will create a scenario based on the film.

You are a victim of a terrible accident and rendered a quadriplegic. After a few month hospital stay a tech billionaire comes to you with a offer. They tell you "What if I told you I could give the ability to walk again ? I call it STEM its a computer chip that's going to change everything. Its a new better brain and to be clear your thoughts will still be your own." Do you accept their offer to be their test subject?

You find out later after the operation you are faster stronger and more intellectual than anyone you know. The one trade off is the computer chip talks to you. A voice only you can hear.

The chip can only take full control of actions with your permission and that control is temporary.

I think I would say yes. At that point what would I have to lose? If it didn't work than at least I could say i tried the most advanced treatment possible. Plus the idea of six million dollar man is rather cool.

What say you in NSG? Would you accept the offer?

Given I talk to myself anyway, it might be nice to talk to someone different. Depends what the computer talks about I guess.

Yep. Besides, what's one more voice in my head, at least the voices will have someone new to talk with.

Sure, I'd do it as long as the computer's voice was that of Susan Sarandon.

Depends on the AI.

Are we talking tactical appraisal, and loyalty like Cortana?

Or Skynet, and well...the rise of the machines.

Depends, do I still control my body, or does the chip control my body and you're just telling it what to do? Also depends on who the billionaire is.

Nope, that's how someone takes control of your body and makes you murder the important person giving a speech in front of the crowd. You get all the consequences and the guy who made the chip gets what he wanted.

How do you come to that conclusion based on the parameters given?

In normal circumstances? Not a chance. Not worth it.

In the given situation, assuming I can trust that Mr. Stark over there is being entirely truthful, what do I have to lose by trying it? I'll take a voice in my head over a body that doesn't function. I could name him JARVIS.

The chip could be programmed to perform a certain action when certain conditions are met, overriding any of your commands. Like, assassinating a president when you're supposed to be the secret service. Afterwards, there is no evidence about whether or not you commanded the chip to do it, but you will never be trusted with anything ever again.

In those specific circumstances, yes, in a heart beat. But man would I then use my newfound abilities to look for a better alternative.

Of course it's not time. It's never time, not on its own. You make it time. If you're under fire in the no-man's land of WW1, you start digging a foxhole even if the ideal time would be when you *aren't* being bombarded, because once you wait for it to be 'time', other situations will need your attention, assuming you survive that long. If the fields aren't furrowed, plow them. If the iron is not hot, make it so. If society is not ready, change it.

Hell no. Being a cyborg sounds awesome, but The Evil Within centers around being trapped in STEM.
Think the Matrix, but Agent Smith was the Architect who got trapped in his own creation to power it and dresses like an Assassin who didn't look before he leaped into a haystack that was on fire. Agent Smith is Ruben "Ruvik" Victoriano.
The government is elected from pools of experts in whichever fields are necessary, with polarizing issues having a minimum quotient for political balance (like abortion rights would be decided by a mix of pro-choice/pro-life expert advocates, for example).
