Usually a felon is barred by law from election to such positions, or from occupying them if they win(every state has different rules).
Also bear in mind that some states allow felons to regain their gun rights- in Texas, IIRC, for felonies under a certain threshold after five years from release with no crimes other than a class c misdemeanor(what normal people call minor traffic offenses).
