Very nice! That's a very good looking .22.

Also, does anyone have any requests for a new poll?

I've got money saved up (finally). I figure that what I have will buy a Mossberg 500 (or something similar) and a .22 of some sort. It's more then I was expecting to have, which gives me some leeway.

Maverick 88 or H&R Pardner/1871 pump actions are pretty much the slightly cheaper builds of the old Mossy 590 and Remmy 870. Just that the mag-tube is of a slightly funky length on the Pardner.

IIRC, the selling point on 870 and 870 clones being the heavier steel reciever and that even the ultra-cheap builds still have pinned trigger assembly while the 88 has a flexible 'bit' intead of a pin. The safety is also still in the same place. The 88 has a trigger gaurd crossbolt safety but is in the worst spot.

So I've got a friend who's much more knowledgeable about guns than I am, I've been telling him I was thinking about a Mossberg so he brought his over for me and my gf to see.

Now my friend is at least 6ft tall and I'm like 5'4 so when he takes this monster of a shotgun out I'm just 0_0 at the size and weight.

Couldn't even shoulder that thing properly.
Definitely gonna look for a shorter one.

Haha, you can get after market accessory kits for Mossbergs and other shotguns if need be. Just remember to abide the laws regarding short barrel shotguns and all that jazz.

I'm 5'8 and 130, so definitely a lanky guy myself. My buddy has an old Remington 870, tried shooting it a few times, and each time I grossly underestimate the sheer recoil. It renders my aim near useless.

Any of you guys have experience with the Ruger PC Carbine? I've been thinking of getting one once I get everything settled with my new house.

21" barrel on a youth model 20 gauge should be small and light enough.

Still lighter than most AR-15s.

I'm kind of in the opposite camp. I'm about 6'3 and 200 lbs. I'll likely need to get myself a recoil pad to get the stock up to the proper length. The Mossberg aftermarket is huge; you'll probably be able to find shorter stocks and barrels.

Body mechanics are king. It's not about how much of you absorbs the energy, but about how you absorb the energy mechanically. I was regularly bench shooting a Barret rifle by the time I was 13 or 14, and my Freshman sports weigh in had me at 5' 1" and 96 lbs.

Accidental waste, indeed. Though if it puts it in lighter considerations, at least it isn't as bad as the intentional waste of ammo the military does. All those crates of ammo.

Rats, Cabela's was out of pump action shotguns. I was about to buy a Marlin Model 60, but the store was closing. I'll have to go back. Weirdly enough, there was some 9mm there, but it wasn't regular 9mm. It was just ratshot.

Are they really claiming that standard Glock mags are a "custom order" an not eligible for refund? If so, this place sounds like a straight-up scam.

5.45x39 vs 7.62 NATO

Postby Greater Cesnica » Wed Oct 21, 2020 5:59 pm

So I've been running over this scenario in my head: two bullets are fired from a distance of 100 yards at a Level III+ AR500 plate. One of the bullets is 5.45x39, the other is 7.62 NATO. Which one will do more damage/penetrate the plate? I know that speed kills steel, and that the AK-74 round has a bigger cross-section. But 7.62 NATO just has greater energy overall. Thoughts? Also, I've been thinking about this because in the event of my next deployment I have a choice between a rifle chambered in 7.62 NATO or 5.45x39, in addition to standard 5.56 NATO.
