It's weird because you'd think the USA would be more socially conservative. On issues of freedom of speech and expression they're much better though. France had a burka ban, Switzerland banned minarets, and now Denmark is doing too. I understand that it comes from a culture of oppressing women, but if they freely choose to wear it should of course be allowed.

It's not that they're more socially conservative so much as they're more militantly secular...or so they say. France banned all religious symbols, this specifically singles out traditionally Islamic face coverings. Islamophobia doesn't just come from conservatives, there are plenty of Atheists and nonbelievers that see a woman wear a niqab and think that they're somehow holding a grenade in their teeth.

I’d argue that liberals and leftists, especially the ‘Old Left’, are often just as racist, if not worse, than conservatives and the far right. Liberals are perfectly happy to sit on a high horse and lecture everyone else, acting as if they are impervious to criticism because of their inherent moral superiority; often projecting racism, sexism, homophobia and anything negative on their opponents and absolve themselves of being in anyway bound up in those very isms. They eagerly point out the racism of the right and the extremism of the left, but overlook their own racism. I say this because liberals often have a fanatical belief in the superiority of their own lofty ideals and, unlike conservatives, possess a missionary zeal; no salvation excerpt through the church, ugh, I mean ‘liberal democracy’. Ironically, like conservatives, their dogmatism prevents them from seeing how some of the ideas that underpin their worldview are problematic at best and how they actually contribute to global issues, including racism, rather than solve them.
