What exactly does trump think will happen. Kim can't denuclearize. He also cannot give up power. So he is trading a peace treaty worth nothing to him for legitimacy, possible reductions in trade sanctions, and probably increased trade from China. Trump meanwhile gets an ego trip to say "I am the greatest, rocket boy was a good negotiator, we got everything we want, more then we want, but also, so great of a deal, I want to say, Obama could not have done that" as if it were a meaningful accomplishment.

Even if you know the bad guy isn't going to drop the gun, it's always a good idea to shout "Drop the gun!" before you shoot him. It just looks better. I strongly suspect Kim will want a deal he can break quietly, Trump will refuse any deal that isn't packed with verification, and he'll be able to say he did the best he could to prevent what he does next from being necessary.

I think that Kim understands that DPRK economy is getting worse everyday and that's why he finally agreed to meet with Trump. Sanctions at least succeeded. In this case the both leaders are want to achieve something so it's a chance that the summit would be succesful. But there is also a possibility that the tensions will grow because both would go into fury and would start to throw invectives on each other or something childlish like that.
