1. No, coal isn't in general, nor specifically in the context of American coal. It would also come as a hell of a shock to everyone that every period of warming in history was because of coal usage, as we're not aware of Mammoths burning it, for instance.

2. Really, then why is it killing the economy of the Appalachians? (Hint: Putting all your eggs in one basket usually doesn't turn out well)

2a. Coal is an inanimate object; it can't do anything. 2b.What really killed the economy was regulations placed upon it at the end of the last decade and start of this one. Dutch Disease is indeed an issue, but artificially killing it does nothing either.

3. Then why the hell do you support coal?

3. a.Because Fusion doesn't exist yet b. and coal provides jobs.

1. All fossil fuels contribute to it, which includes coal. Also, I don't think Bloomberg is the best source to use for this.
2a. Gee, really? I had no idea. 2b. Apparently you need to learn what economic diversification is...
3a. Even though we have perfectly fine reactors right now, 3b. You mean in a dying industry? Yeah, that makes for great job security, yep yep yep.

Sure, but that's all that American coal spews out and further emissions are rather low to the point that even factoring in global emissions it isn't a threat.

Why do you think American coal is cleaner than that of other nations?

I don't understand why people are so adamant about keeping coal. Regardless of it's status as a dying industry, renewables have the potential to bring in more jobs and the electricity produced would just be cheaper. All around it's the better option going forward, and people have been offered means to adapt to this new option.

If we need more mountains we can just loosen up laws on landfills!

If we're worrying about things on a geological timescales then nothing is a big deal.

Argue against coal for better reasons than it damages mountains.

Depends.

On the corporate side of things (You know, the system that actually controls the country), fossil fuel companies are some of the biggest in the US and they've managed to spread their tentacles into every area of the government. So they have a habit of getting what they want (Like refusing to let coal die).

On a state/town basis, lack of economic diversification and refusal to transition. A lot of areas have based their entire economies based around coal and oil, so if you get rid of that then the area will suffer massive economic hardship. Now the government's trying to diversify the areas, but most people there don't want to because they don't understand why everything can't just stay the same, they like to keep tradition. It's a: "My daddy lived this way, I live this way, and my kids are gonna live this way, God damnit!"-type of mindset.

One has to imagine the new jobs being brought in don't pay as well and probably aren't as numerous.

If only Unions and left wing politicians hadn't forced mine owners to treat miners as people doing a dangerous job instead of virtual slaves. :(
