Because Local and State politics need room to breathe.
This is arguably related enough.Triassica wrote:Https://www.salon.com/amp/the-biggest-threat-to-our-democracy-that-you-have-not-heard-of_partner

That being said as bad as it sounds the article didn't explain enough.
Could you point to some groups that want to do this?

Koch Brothers and Alec mostly along with some liberal groups. The problem is that republicans got most of the state legislatures thanks to their ratfucking. So the idea of Republicans rewriting the Constituon in their own extreme theocratic, libertarian and oligarchical image is like the beginning of the worse of dystopia made real.

I don't think you can have theocratic and libertarian at the same time.

Regardless, the Kochs’ Americans for Prosperity says it favors a balanced budget convention. Such an austerity amendment would drastically cut the size of the federal government, threatening critical programs like Social Security and Medicare and eviscerating the government’s ability to respond to economic downturns, major disasters and the climate crisis.
The Kochs, in essence, want to kill the country we know, love, and want to improve, and turn what remains into a dystopian shithole by neutering the ability of the government to do anything to "promote the general Welfare" of the country and instead making it about the general welfare of businessowners who want to treat their employees like expendable slaves, which we are already dead close to becoming under the fist of the GOP.

Did it? I seem to remember the period of 'small government' before the Civil War being one of abject repression by individual states.
