They had to build up the military first before they could even hope to fight Nazi Germany.
And is there any actual proof Stalin didn't expect Hitler to invade? Because I'm pretty sure they hated each other and the reason he signed that deal with Hitler when Germany invaded Poland was to build up the Russian military.

I'm pretty sure there are sources that say Stalin didn't expect the betrayal, that might've been a timing thing, though.

Either way, I'm not looking for sources because that's not the point of the thread.

Protectionism.

Coupled with what is essentially union-busting. To do what? The workers can't benefit from protectionism, or the induced labour shortage of strict immigration limitations, if they can't negotiate their conditions. So what is protectionism for?

Not to mention the harm that counter-protectionist measures by other countries will bring on these same workers.
