The new Doctor Who, what did you think?

Postby EvilDarkMagicians » Sat Apr 03, 2010 11:46 am

I thought it was exciting, thrilling and very different from every other doctor who so far.
I already had a bad feeling about Matt Smith, but all of that was flung away once I started watching the new episode.
He had a sort of weird atmosphere about him, even weirder than David Tennant, but I sort of liked it.......
Just some questions to get your general feeling about the episode:

1. How was Matt Smith's acting? Hot or not?(For me he's growing on me).
2. How was Karen Gillam's acting? Hot or not?(Kiss-o-gram, what a saucy minx!).
3.Anything you HATED about the episode?(I thought the bit where they went back in time to see what the Doctor saw was a bit weird).
4.Anything you LOVED about the episode?(Wasn't the new TARDIS great?)
5.Did you like the new TARDIS?(See above)
6.Rate the episode in general out of ten.(9/10 for me).

I don't know. In jolly old America, the new season of Doctor Who doesn't come out till April 14th (or somewhere around there). Guess what? It's April 3rd ;)

As much as I love Doctor Who, I'm afraid I don't love it quite that much :p

Decent episode. Didn't set the world alight thought. (see what I did there?)

Smith is too much like Tenent so far.

Gillam is hot, wasn't paying attention to the quality of acting while she was on screen tbqh.

The TARDIS was a bit meh.

6/10, slightly above average, let down by awful effects and a not particulary convincing story line.

Just so you know, there is a Doctor Who discussion thread in Arts and Fiction, and the debate is starting.

Early days, in my opinion, but I think the episode got off to a reasonably good start: it seems to match most of what I expected when I read the accompanying issue of the Radio Times last week (since I subscribed to it). Okay, Smith may look like Tennant because in my opinion it lends a suggestion to the evolution of the Doctor.

Yes I did!

Smith is too much like Tenent so far.

Well he is supposed to be the same person. But I thought he was a bit stranger...

Gillam is hot, wasn't paying attention to the quality of acting while she was on screen tbqh.

Men.

The TARDIS was a bit meh.

How could it of been better?

6/10, slightly above average, let down by awful effects

The crappy effects is what it makes it great!

and a not particulary convincing story line.

You do realise this is Doctor who? :eyebrow:

When is the Doctor going to get a gay assistant? They've already run the whole gamut of Political Correctness; women, blacks, black women, gingers, the Scottish...

All we need is the token homosexual, a Jew and a man in a wheelchair and the cycle will be complete.

In fact, what about a gay Jewish paraplegic?

I don't want Smith to be too much like Tennant.

Also, how has the TARDIS changed?

I know but the difference between Ecclestone and Tenent was massive. I like having a different Doctor.

Well that dodgy glass vase in the tube could be got rid of for a start.....

They've had the gay assistant. I believe Captain Jack Harkness was the person chosen. Tbh, I don't think any of the companions has had any outward religious viewpoints, so rule out Jews. And when will they have a black Doctor?

Torchwood man (Jack Barrowman, I believe) was bi, which, in the minds of much of the great British public, is practically the same thing as gay.

Well, it's bigger and has more levels. The screen and controls have differed, and well... the screen is a television!? And somewhere there's a swimming pool...

There's always been a swimming pool, I think. And a cricket pavilion, if my memory serves me correct. And all sorts of other stuff. I'd like a story to be set entirely in the TARDIS. That would be cool.

The first TV show I watched on my new HD TV, but not that great. Early doors, though.

Smith, in my mind, is far too Tennant-esque- maybe it's my being used to the more radical change between Ecclestone and Tennant, but I can't see the real difference. Despite his youth, he does sort of look older than he is.

Gillan was alright, in both acting and sexual appeal.

Now, hated:

-Obvious plot flaw: he's got a frickin' Time Machine, so how the frick did he end up being so late twice?
-Playing for time: one-hour episode is too big- I realised 'the human residence' was the whole world the moment it was heard on the ice-cream van's radio.
-More playing for time: the tracking round the park/'what did I see' thing was a weird and blatant time-wasting manoeuvre.
-New theme music. Bring back the Russell T Davies era theme, which sounded far more majestic.

Loved:

-Nothing in particular. Pretty good though- the picture of the Earth at the start looked good in HD.

New TARDIS: No radical change. Meh.

Overall: 6.5

Hopefully it'll improve over the course of the series.
